Thread: Site Suggestion

I'll toss out my peanut gallery comments:

    - A minimum post count would just encourage people to grind out their post count. We play Warcraft, it enforces that behavior pretty well, I'd rather not see the same pointless behavior encouraged here as well.

    - Lets face it, the average person is average. This usually means the "elite" think they are a waste of oxygen and should be removed from the breeding stock, I know I do, but if we get rid of them then the elite would be average. I don't know about everyone else, but I don't like being average. I want to be a unique and individual snowflake - just like everyone else.

    - Stupid people that want to be spoon-fed are a fact of life. A large chunk of people will never use search, will never read the stickies, the wiki, or do any research on what they want to know. We have to live with it unless we shut ourselves up in a tower. I believe the problem with elitist communities that create to high of a barrier of entry is they tend to miss out on a new and interesting solution, or way of looking at a problem, usually proposed by a newer un-indoctrinated individual in the community.

Personally, let everyone speak. The stupid ones will get bashed over the head a couple times. I'm sure most of us don't get to openly bash stupid people in our day jobs, we can only hope we never run out of stupid (and that they decide to post outside of New Multi-Boxers & Support)

    - We will always see people asking if X computer can support 5 Warcraft clients unless we start deleting these posts, or moving them into New Multi-Boxers & Support.

    - We will always see people complaining about spending a couple bucks for Keyclone.

So long as dual-boxing.com is an open public forum these problems will occur.

Anything cool is flypaper for stupid. Right now, multiboxing is cool.

    I still don't understand pre-paid time cards.

That's a good idea. Maybe moderators who get repeated/common questions could private msg the appropriate thread link to the new poster and then delete their post. This would make the site cleaner and easier for more newer boxers to find the posts they are searching for.

    When do we begin construction?

The problem with restricting access to newbies is that you're also restricting access to informative posts in specialized forums.

If the newbie is a smart newbie and can find the perfect PvP post that discusses their problem, or something along those lines, then they will be prevented from participating and will clutter up the newbie forum.

I think the primary problem we have is that it's...
    - very hard to find information, since stickies are in multiple forums and the wiki button isn't big enough that a new user will find it.
    - very hard to discern what IS a "newbie question" and what would be more appropriate for the software forum or the hardware forum -- making the newbie forum harder to navigate/search

I think perhaps even having a "Guides/Stickies" forum would be useful (where new threads are disabled, making it easy to navigate), perhaps along with cross-linking stickies to the guides/stickies forum where appropriate (i.e. sticky link from Software forum to the actual guide in the guides forum). Or even making a "Wiki" link similar to how we make our "Community Guidelines" link so that the wiki is more noticable within the meat of the forum...

More aggressive moderation can help reduce clutter as well -- I'm all for assisting with that. The one thing I worry about is disheartening the newbies or losing the newbies if "Hey, my thread disappeared from the General forums! Where is it? *repost*" starts happening.

In any case, I think better definition of "what post goes where?" would be appropriate as well. For example -- the software/hardware forums used to be for announcing new and interesting software/hardware that might work for multiboxing. These days, it's more of a support forum for "My hardware/software isn't working!". Should we seperate Software Support and Hardware Support?

That and everyone is too busy Multiboxing to fill out the wiki (myself included).

Stop being lazy, contribute to the community. Make a wiki to be PROUD of. :P

    Hiya...

Anyway we can set up a test type system for a new user to gain access?

Something where they'd have to click 2-3 links and garner information... Simple questions with simple answers.

    1. Find the address to the dual-boxing.com wiki and paste it below.

    2. What is a stickie?
    a. a place where I can find basic answers
    b. posts I should search before I ask what may be a basic question.
    c. All of the above.

    3. What forum should you post hardware/software type questions in?
    a. General
    b. New boxers
    c. Hardware/Software forum.

Or we could make the test really hard... so we know everyone that gets in has put forth some effort.. and are willing to put in the work.

The wiki should be the front dual-boxing.com. I'm assuming most of the new users are referred to the website by multi boxers.

    Main - Lootdrone lvl70 Mage Bloodscalp 5box - Tioget, Tiodrone, Tioluv, Tiogriz, Tiobuzz q9450 - 4gb ram - 8800gt 512 - 400gb hd - 500gb hd

I have noticed some of the members of the community beginning to become upset with the advent of more and more people coming into this hobby/whatever and doing no research at all and asking really dumb stuff that has been covered before. I was thinking that maybe you could restrict access to new posters and limit them to only posting in certain forums. Once they hit an acceptable number of posts and/or prove themselves to have valid questions then the receive full access to the rest of the site. Just an idea. Also they should still have access to view all forums, only restricted access to posting.
OK, first off, I'll address your statements in no particular order..........

asking really dumb stuff that has been covered before.
"Dumb stuff that has been covered before" FOR YOU and all the other "veteran" Multiboxers, it's "dumb stuff"
You've forgotten that YOU Yourself and ALL the other 'veteran' multiboxers' asked the SAME "Dumb stuff when they were first starting out.
    So........WHY NOT HELP OUT?
Apparently, Instead, You'd rather be done with it............HEY WORLD!!!! I've done what I came to do, FUCK everybody else that asks me how I did it!!!!!!
    doing no research at all
OK....I'll be the first to say it......The "SEARCH" SUCKS!
I've typed in "Party", "Team", "3", "three", you name it, I've typed it, and 99% of the time I get the "red" banner saying Search couldn't find anything.
I tried making sure that I was at the home page, rather than INSIDE a forum, but either way, I can attest that a good 90% of ANY searches come up with NOTHING!

Trust me....I search EVERY day, in order to NOT piss off anyone who might take offense at any questions I ask that have been answered in a thread that's BURIED from the year 2007
(it ALSO doesn't help that some links refer to an old board?, I've clicked some links that sent me to a non-existing Message-board, and it redirects me to this Board's Index, with
NO reference whatsoever to the original link I clicked on (And a LOT of those are HELP links)

Try Google sometimes...it will lead you to a LOT of links to THIS BOARD but the links are about 2 years old, so they NEVER bring you to this board and help you find what you're looking for.

NOTE: Don't use JOOMLA for a board
I was thinking that maybe you could restrict access to new posters and limit them to only posting in certain forums
Wow....is that a shitty suggestion or what?
In a Nutshell.... you're saying "let's round up the people that don't know as much as I do, and make them EARN their right to post here....."

So in essence what you're saying is "I asked all these annoying questions when I first started Multiboxing, but NOW that I know what I'm doing, I don't want to see anyone else ask them?"
Here's ANOTHER option....when you see a thread asking the "SAME OBVIOUS STUFF THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW"....Don't click on it, because someone is asking something YOU already know.
AVOID the urge to jump into a Newbie thread and be a complete dick.
AVOID the urge to jump into a newbie thread and make snide comments about "how the newbie could've answered that themselves" "IF THEY ONLY USED THE SEARCH BUTTON"
(insert the Bwa bwa bwa Trombones)

Honestly....If you're that 'L33T" why are you here?

the definition of 'forum' is "community" if you and any other multiboxers feel you've gone beyond us regular mouthbreathers and you feel we're holding your ankles,
preventing you from ascending to GOD status, by asking all of you "HOW DID YOU DO THAT?" then you've got it all wrong

I have noticed some of the members of the community beginning to become upset
Yea....you know WHO is becoming upset?

People who have forgotten WHERE THEY started......the same people who get upset and annoyed because "day after day" people come here and ask the SAME questions are the
same people who asked the SAME questions when they got started........

The only difference is..............."once you figure it out, you don't want to be arsed with helping anybody else, the people asking questions at that point, become a nuisance

I tell ya, in my opinion, after reading these boards, and seeing such a persecuted bunch of people (MB QQ) on the WOW forums......and then to find out that there's "classes" that exist HERE TOO?

Shocking.....I thought that the MB community would be kind of like "Hey welcome Brother, I see another multiboxer here, need help?"

But instead I see a rift.....between Multiboxers who're all set up, and Multiboxers "who are just getting started, AND ASKING QUESTIONS" all this
"Members of the community getting annoyed by people asking the same questions over an over"

Good thing the Martial Arts didn't have the same attitude as an "elite MB"

Student: Sifu! I wish to learn the ways of Multiboxing!
Sifu: LOL do a Search Newb!
Student: But Sifu, I understand you're the best!
Sifu: Has you even done a SEARCH for Multiboxing!?!??!?
Student: Yes Sifu, I have....It contained NOTHING
Sifu: Then you are a LOOSER (Corect spelling: LOSER) STFU NEWB!
Student: But Sifu, how am I to learn if you won't tell me?
Sifu: BAN this loser! Or better yet, make it so he can onmly post in a NEWB forum, where he can't ask IMPORTANT questions....I can't be arsed with dealing with him!
Student: Sifu, You know the way!, You know the answers to all of my questions, will you help me?
Sifu: All your questions would've been answered if you had use the SEARCH button........

See where I'm going? or do I need to use the WOW forum "I c wat u did thar"?
The mind of a Non-Multiboxer is like the the pupil of the eye......The more light you shine on it, the smaller it gets.
