Default Help a Pally newb who really needs a tank.

I decided to level a pally to get myself a tank. Leveled him to level 8 no problem. Put him in with my Main, Mage & did Powerleveling/boosting till Level 38.

Now that he's 38, I started to try & play him normal & quest. To my uninitiated eyes, playing a ret pally at that level is about as fun as watching paint dry. I think i may be doing some things wrong.

If you had the following at your disposal:
    4x70mages, 1x70priest, 5x70shammies, All Moderately geared.

Whats your preferred method of leveling a pally?
    1. Quest & level Normal, solo as a ret pally?
(It works, but its mind numbingly boring imo)

    2. Spec the pally AOE/prot & have him AOE grind with either A priest or shammy not in group backing him up with heals.

    3. Something I didnt think of yet because i don't know much about pallys, except that I want one at 70 to tank for one of my 2 multibox teams.
1Priest, 4Mages Qyx, Kwix, Aquix, Cquix, Quixar // 5 Shammies, Quixs, Quixas, Quixbs, Quixcs, Quixds // Quix Inc (Gurubashi PVP)

Try a few things for an hour each and see what happens...

    1) Questiong, solo grinding, etc etc (this is probably not the best choice)

    2) Boost with one mage (I think this might be the best choice).

    3) Boost with ALL FOUR mages (or maybe 3x mages & holy nova priest) (This might turn out interesting...)

The XP per kill with a lvl 70 in your group is not a well known formula. I wonder if 4x 70 & 1x boostee would gain around the same amount of xp per kill?

If thats the case.....gather 10-20 mobs AE, rinse repeat. You would annihilate everything. If case 3 gives you good xp/hr I would definitely go with that. You could boost with 4x mages all the way to 50 I would imagine.

    4x Shammies!

Stay ret and do quests for the most part. Since the xp boost in quest lines, boosting above 40ish just doesnt work as well anymore. I normally quest til I get really bored(or get a ton of instance quests) then go run a complete instance (with 2 70s), then back to questing. When I get to 58, I usually hop over to hellfire and do instances to lvl. Just fyi pallies and priests are the most boring by far to lvl for me.

... you might want to go prot when you hit 60 btw and start tanking away a bit in instances with your grp set up (and there are some great aoe places to lvl for prot pally in outlands.

I used 2 ways to lvl my Pally,

    1) Prot AOE Farm, You can use your mages to get him geared in prot gear then you can take 5-6 mobs same lvl and AOE farm them. Fastest way to level imho. At 35 or 36 i could solo most of lib and Armory. It gave some great xp.

    2) Spec into prot until you get Reckoning. Get a Giant 2 Hander spec in to either Seal of Command or Holy to get Imp Righteousness Damage per swing. When it procs which is quite a bit you'll most likely 3 shot any mob your level.

    * Seal of command is a Proc it does ok damage but it still a proc.

    * Seal of Righteousness is a Constant Damage seal. Its based off of your Spell damage and Weapon speed/damage iirc. So the slower it is the more it hits for per swing, and when reckoning Procs and you get the extra hit its pretty crazy damage. If you get the Thrash blade from the mara Quest that also procs and extra hit you can sometimes 1 shot most mobs because of the Extra attack procs.

    * To get the most out of Reckoning though its recommended to have weapon with a speed of no more than 2.7 so you dont waste any charges of Reckoning.

There is a third option of having the mage follow your pally out of group and just power through quests.

I leveled 3 paladins to 70 (don't ask me why)...

1st human paladin: First character ever, ret solo up to 60 (18 days played)

2nd draenei paladin: Carebear dual-boxed with my 60 human paladin, 62-70 solo ret to 70 (9 days played)

3rd blood elf paladin: dual-boxed with a warrior quest grinding to 70 (12 days played, post 2.3)

Of those 3, I'd recommend carebear dual-boxing with an out of group healer if you have that option.

Today I'd probably just boost my pally as high as my gear on my 70 would allow to make the xp/hr worth it, then care-bear dual box em the rest of the way.

1 Prot Pally lowbie ungrouped, followed by 4x 70 Shamans dropping 4 Fire Nova and Stoneclaws?

    Earth Shield should help.
Sanctume [Paladin] + [Team Shaman] Sanctumea + Sanctumei + Sanctumeo

When the character is able to be earth shielded, I would definitely go for the Prot Pally+ungrouped Shaman earth shielder/healer route. It's very fast.
    Cranky old-timer.
