Default What happens when an addon goes too far?

    Blizzard fixes it:

    http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-a...tails/avr.aspx

This is a notice that we’re making changes in 3.3.5 in attempts to break the ability for the AVR (Augmented Virtual Reality) mod to continue functioning. For those unaware, this mod allows players to draw in the 3D space of the game world, which can then be shared with others who are also using the mod. In some cases this manifests itself through drawing/tagging/defacing the game world, but more popularly is used to give visual guides for dungeon and raid encounters.

We’re making this change for two reasons. The invasive nature of a mod altering and/or interacting with the game world (virtually or directly) is not intended and not something we will allow. World of Warcraft UI addons are never intended to interact with the game world itself. This is mirrored in our stance and restriction of model and texture alterations. The second reason is that it removes too much player reaction and decision-making while facing dungeon and raid encounters. While some other mods also work to this end, we find that AVR and the act of visualizing strategy within the game world simply goes beyond what we’re willing to allow.

The change we’re making in attempts to break the functionality is light in its touch and approach. When blocking any functionality we run the risk of affecting other mods, but we’ve targeted the changes as carefully as possible. If we find that the AVR mod (or any mod attempting to replicate its functions) are usable after 3.3.5 we will take further, more drastic steps.

shame, looked like it could have helped with a few pugs I've had the (un)enjoyable experience to play with

"you see that red circle I've marked on the ground with the arrow pointing to the boss? Well stand in the circle and make sure you're facing in the direction of the arrow"

there is another addon that does a similar thing, except its not in the 3D world
a small popup box where the raidleader can just draw thing and all partymembers who have that addon installed can see it
can't remember the name, and used it only once and it was great
for a beginning guild that could basically be the same help as the banned one

it seems nice, and could be potentially cool.
but alas... the wow majority are retards.. so some one is bound to take it 1 step farther and program in every boss fight so no one has to watch videos or look up strats on fights, or learn the fight from experience. (as we know.. blizzard wants to show off their creations.. (no flying in northrend) and they want people to be stumped by their fights but at the same time allow everyone to get to do it (ICC 15% buff).
I do not blame them for banning this addon. its a smack in the face to the designers...with the direction it would have headed.

One of my worries is that this might have an effect on Power Auras - it seems to do some nifty stuff on the terrain... (mind, I'm just guessing and I not have used Power Auras, I have been meaning too, but I might just wait and see if it stills works after the patch).

powerauras? if I am thinking the same addon.. it doesn't really draw anything on environment. kinda just a way for people to not watch buffs.. kinda cheap, but blizz does let us move/change where n how buffs are shown so a addon that shows more specific of a buff isn't much different.
meh who knows what they are going to whip the hammer out on now. maybe they crack down on stuff like Deadly Boss Mods.

DBM goes off of game mechanics, it tells you of events, it does not tell you explicitly where to move, just what is going on. If they wanted to add raid warnings to say "move to XXXXX" then thats one thing, but what AVR is doing is against the ToS

When AVR first came out it was something that I wanted to try out didn't get around to using it. When I saw that post this morning wanted to give it a try before the nerf. Ran ICC 25 tonight lol holy fuck AVR is like raiding for retards I can totally see why it is getting the nerfbat. AVR + DBM + Boss Text to Speech = /drool collect the loot. At 5500-5600 GS on 3 of 4 shams other is 5400 Fun times hoping to finish up some new bosses in ICC 10 sunday!

Yeah, AVR makes a lot of the bosses a lot easier.
I'm going to live forever, or die trying.

I would love to see them start smashing addons all over like DBM and AVR and anything else that takes the thought out of the game. Addons make rading boring for me. Blizzard is forced into a corner with encounter design due to mods like this. The only way to make something challenging is to make it 3D super frogger.

Actually being good at a game and able to multitask used to set apart good players from bad. Now that addons have screwed that people have fallen back on gearscore knowing that the only encounter limitations are gear checks and ability to walk to a giant arrow on your screen when DBM starts blowing up your Raid Warning Dialogue.
