If you read around the forums a bit I think the majority would say 3 beast and 1 survial or marksmen or perhaps 1 healing type like pally priest etc...
I use 5 BMs and love it. I use 5 different pets for DPS and 3 gorillas and wolf and screecher for hard PVE. Too many nice features in BM to give it up. Longevity, spirit bond, increased focus regen, added DPS in more than 2-3 places, increased armor, the list goes on.
you know of anny pet that do AoE dmg?
I believe the flame birds in Shadowmmon valley.....

when i ran my hunter set they were bm, its kinda like auto pilot just have your pets do most everything for you, be an ass and use concussive shot and charge your pets in is the extent of boxing hunters, at least to lvl them.
Gorilla has AoE with added taunt, and is IMO the best PvE leveling pet. I can easily pull 6 same-level mobs at a time and mow them down with volley.Originally Posted by 'Lilith',index.php?page=Thread&postID=155909#post1 55909

I've posted more detail in other threads, but here's my recommendation:
Go all Beastmaster, get all Gorilla pets.
I've tried 3xBM,1xMM and 2xBM,1xMM,1xSurv... these mixed combinations are all equivalent (or less) DPS.
Gorillas have the best aggro capability plus the best AoE damage. You can mix up other pets, but none of the other pet buffs/debuffs make up for the lost Thunderstomp DPS. It's that good.
Honestly, if you are just questing or killing packs of non-elites, it doesn't really matter. Any spec/pet combo will work fine. Your main issue will be minimizing travel time (I keep up Aspect of the Pack permanently to speed things up).
If you're killing groups of multiple elites in instances... then it is very hard to beat 4xBM with all Gorillas. I've tried to beat it, and I can't. (At super high gear levels, a 3xBM+1xMM will overtake 4xBM, but it's not going to happen while you're leveling).
I've found my four hunter team with BM and gorillas make leveling much better than any other combination I've tried. When I add my druid in for healing I switch in two cats and two gorillas for instances. Gorillas are great AoE tanks, and having multiple is very helpful in case one of them dies.

I have been doing 3 hunters all BM and it works amazingly. I mow things down so fast with 2 cats and a wolf that i really don't think you could get much faster. Its incredibly easy too. I just bound pet attack and arcane shot all to 3 which is what i open with...
WIthout a doubt you should get a wolf for at least one of your pets because they increase your entire parties DPS.
Some people tell you to get a gorilla pet but i wouldn't waste the DPS to get a tank, my cats never lose agro or go below 80% hp unless i get a ton of mobs on me. Only boxing 3 hunters though i can probably kill more than 10 mobs at a time without any pets or any characters dying, and i kid you not.
The only reason i would consider gorillas would be if you want to AOE grind. 4 Gorillas would pretty much take care of the job for you, by the time you got volley in the right spot on your other 3 characters the mobs woudl be dead.
GL whatever you do
