I level all mine at the same pace and ding them all at the same time. I think someone already mentioned about quests not being available for the lower level toons if one speeds ahead. Another reason would be that i can go get my new spells at the same time. As for having one higher level character to put off gankers....never had that problem tbh, why would you, with 5 shaman capable of killing anyone nearly instantly

I've always taken the attitude that it's better to do it on one char than none at all... If I feel like grinning and bearing it and doing it on 2, it'll be the healer and the tank. To me makes sense that these are slightly more progressed and with access to more varied quest gear, makes instancing easier, and like other say, they'll all hit the level cap in the end.

I do a lot of screwy instance runs with guildies, often leaving one or more of my "team" members out. So I just level to level - if one or more fall behind, so be it. They'll all hit 80 eventually.
    I second this approach

I'm getting tired of the collection quests, so any time one annoys me too much the first time, I do it only on my main and perhaps one other toon. (My main is my hunter - the highest damage outputter in the group.)

I'd rather have a dps be the highest level than a tank. A tank won't help you clear instances faster if they can already handle the place - but a dps will. (Note that a healer also won't help you clear it faster.)

Normally I do every quest on my main (pally) and only non-collection quests on the rest of my team, so he's always 2-3 levels ahead of them. It helps when I go instance grind, the instance might be a little low for him but it makes it all easier.

Also sometimes I just want to take it easy and not run 5 toons, so I'll take 2 toons (usually pally and healer) and just complete every quest in zone. It helps me learn my way around and learn the quests ... maybe later I'll run my other 3 through them if the instance grinding gets to be too dull.

I also do the same thing, particularly with my hunters+druid. I've run instances with all combinations of the characters, from 1-5 of them. It happens that I group up with a healer or tank buddy a lot and we'll just fill out the rest of the group with who we need. I will try to choose amongst the hunters to keep XP somewhat balanced, but I also make decisions about who might need a run to complete a quest reward inside an instance.

If I am overland questing, I almost always do them with my whole team and keep them "synchronized".
    Cranky old-timer.
