It was definitely a restriction, along with not being able to transfer from PvE to PvP servers because players were to endure the difficulty of leveling on a PvP server to temper their character.Originally Posted by Moorea
You are mis-remembering, as the server-faction restriction wasn't lifted until patch 3.2.0 in Wrath.

- Playing teams on PVE servers
- Picking 1 realm for Ally 1 realm for Horde
- Focusing on only 1 faction
- 10 boxing and splitting 5 and 5
- ...Anything else?...

I'll be multiboxing on a PvE server, but not because of the same-faction restriction on PvP servers, as I'm expecting that I'll only be playing Alliance.
Why are you looking to play both factions on the same server? Just because of the sense of knowing/understanding the server community better? If that's the case, it might be time for a second BNet account with a separate 5-man team.

it's to live both sides of the experience (including having paladins and shamans and not missing out on either), as well as, if I can swing it on same server, be able to have my highest/richest team help the other one
