Dimensions - are they of any use or are they just decorative?

ie. can you put storage boxes/chests/whatever into one, give access to mates, thus providing communal storage?

You cant do much with your first one, but from what I heard many of the later ones contain vendors and such.

It's pretty much only for decoration. But:

1. You can add training dummies. It's useful to have a private dummy that you can parse alone, without having other people debuff the target or messing up your parse.

2. Since you can build anything, you can build little mini games (e.g. platform games, mazes, etc) for amusement.

3. You can add some vendors, but it may be for guild dimensions only.
