There's a lot of choice in EVE which is what makes it difficult to decide what to do. I've settled for industrial activity because I can make semi-afk while I work from home. It's quite satisfying seeing the ore pile up in your hangars and working out that you can sell it to get some free subscription time.
I started playing EVE a few years ago and played it on and off, alternating with WoW and other games. It's only recently where things have come together that I've played EVE for more than a few months at a time.
Best way to start is to try for yourself - ask one of us to send youa buddy invite and get a 21 day trial - then if you subscribe we get 30 days free.
You then use that trick to set yourself up with however many accounts you want - I topped out at around sixteen before I decided I was being silly. Chaining buddy invites can save you a lot of expense in the first few months.
EVE can be a very expensive game as you either have to make ISK in order to progress or spend real money to buy PLEX and sell them for ISK. But it's pretty satisfying to go from paying for gametime to playing for gametime.
Oh and don't browse the EVE forums, EVE has the most malignant, troll infested forums ever, really it's impossible to believe how badly behaved they are.
