You underestimate the amount of lazy people and the amount of stupid/unaware people. And as long as the playerbase attaches social value to certain vanity items in the game, the majority will never have enough gold.

Assuming one does not have moral objections to breaking the rules, and can spend 25-50$ and get enough gold in 2 minutes to buy what he wants compared to either having to farm his nuts off taking him months or spending hours on figuring out profession manual / gold blogs / learning addons, ... I can understand that they go for the easy way.

The reason why I don't buy gold is not because a blizzard rule tells me I'm not allowed to do so or that it's wrong, but it's because:
    - i fear the repercussions on my accounts when i'd do so
    - i enjoy playing the economy in games, making me having more than enough gold
    - i don't trust those gold selling companies whatsoever
    - it's my opinion that it affects the economy ingame and thus the gameplay to the negative
Everything that is fun in life is either bad for your health, immoral or illegal!

I knew a guy who has since quit the game.
For a two year period, he bought around $100 of gold per paycheck.

There are plenty of gold sinks in the game, in you want to spend gold.
    EverQuest I: Bard / Enchanter / Druid / Wizard / 2x Magician.
    Diablo III: 4x Crusader & 4x Wizard.

For me it is the ones I underlined, plus:

    - It's so easy to farm all of the gold that I need, which isn't much

There isn't much that you need to farm gold for. They've cut the costs of just about everything, and they raised the speed of the starter flying skill so that you don't really have to upgrade it. I have about 15,000 gold on all my characters right now, and I'm kind of curious as to just how much I'll end up with by the time most of them are 85. Questing/leveling should be a big net plus in gold. Professions will provide an extra boost when I sell off stuff I do not need or that happens to be selling high. Daily quests? Oh geez...
