There are many other non-government options for situations like that. I have a cousin whose baby was born with a hole in her heart. To make a long story short, the hospital and doctors performed 3 operations at no cost to them and they have received a lot of help from the local community and church.
The point is, the government is not the only answer. There are many charities out there that will help people when they need it. And there are a lot of people willing to donate to these charities which is true generosity.
Plus, there is a big difference in the charity the government hands out vs. an actual charity organization hands out. I have 2 nephews who have been unemployed almost 2 years now, they live in NJ but have spent most of their time in Florida visiting friends who are in college down there. They are complaining that they have to go back to NJ to start looking for a job because their unemployment is running out.
