LOl i just realized with this new case im making i wont have a start button. does anyone know a way to jerry rig something up or if theres some way to tell your mobo to get in the game without actualy hooking anything having those wires? i could probably find an old case but i dont want to if i can avoid it.
If it has a reset button you could wire it to that instead.
Edit: nm, you're making the case, so the lack of buttons is your own fault :P - go to radio shack and buy a momentary SPST push button and wire the two leads to the mobo power switch pin header.
touch both pins with a screwdriver?
Have two wires coming out of the case, and touch them as if you were hot-wiring a car ... :D
ok yeah, im using old speaker wire as of now. turning it off shoots spark in my face but it comes on like a charm, ill think of a better way but not tonight. now i know it works, thanks for the quick helpful posts :D

I had a MB Bios a few years ago that would allow it to start up with a keyboard press or mouse action. I set it to start with the keyboard and just hit the space bar to start it. I haven't seen this option for a while but It would be nice if they brought it back. Making slick cases would be much easier without power/reset to deal with.
I just sleep my machine and wake it up by clicking USB mouse.

Seeing as how the power button circuit requires a simple momentary switch and you seem to be building something special, I would use this opportunity to incorporate something neat. Maybe a Lego switch, an Easy Button, a telegraph sender, hidden microswitch, you can use almost anything.
Elegantly - as you put it - would be to hook up an actual power button the way ATX was intended to be used. But since the OP wants to disregard the way the system was designed.....Quote:

Question for you. How do you power up the system with no power button to enter the bios and enable the "wake on lan" settings? Or the "wake on keyboard / mouse" options? (without using a screwdriver / paperclip / etc).
And then later when the wake-on-lan / wake on mouse/keyboard fails to actually wake up the PC, what do you do then? (because they will fail, sooner or later)
Someone already said it, you need a momentary on switch/button. Go check out radio shack, they may have em. You can buy the vandel from Frozen pc's, but those guys are out of New Jersey ( I think.....somewhere around there though) and shipping isn't the greatest. I usually buy from
PPC
which I think is in florida, but unless Frozen has lowered their pricing on all their stuff, PPC is usually lower $$ and better ship rates overall. Not sure about the switch, $7 for the vandel switch isn't bad. Or try mountain mods, think they are out of oregon

Kinda motivates me to start back up and finish my computer case project. Have like $1000 in just cooling hardware sitting around waiting to go into that case. Just feeling too lazy recently to go to the shop on my own time.

I had this exact scenario when I threw together an extra machine for multiboxing using spare parts. I ended up building the machine in a shoebox, which naturally did not come with an on/off button... A quick trip to the hardware store for the cheapest doorbell I could find, and I was in business; worked perfectly.

Haha, wake on lan... that's rich. Every PC that I enabled that one worked about 50% of the time, the other 50% I had to hard reset. What a crock of shit.
Computer in a shoebox is easily the most ghetto thing I've seen in a long time 8o But kudos on originality!
You're Doing It Wrong(tm). WoL is extremely reliable, provided you're sending the correct data to the system in the "magic packet." The problem isn't reliability, it's that every damn manufacturer/BIOS/NIC expects different things in the packet. We used to have a test case at HP that was to spam WoL requests with various junk data and other network activity and would see some of the cheaper NICs wake up when they got basic pings or even network discovery requests. We called it "wake on crap." :PQuote:

[edit] back on topic: Some motherboard manufacturers have settings that allow the system to wake from S3/S4/S5 (S5 = power off) via keyboard, mouse or both. That might be a less expensive/bodgy solution if yours supports it. ;)
