Yepper's, double exp weekend!
Printable View
That was on Thursday and double exp wasn't applied to the TLP servers /cry. Maybe I lost track of time and it really wasn't a fast level. :)
Well, I've upgraded to 6 total now. Boxing a Shadow Knight, Cleric, Enchanter and three Mage's, all Dark Elves. Once Kunark is open I will roll my Ikky Shaman.
Sounds evil. How does pet control work right now anyway? We can't order pets to attack right? They just attack when the owner attacks?
I played EQ from early Beta 2 up until DaoC came along, and then went back after couple of years of DaoC until WoW hit the scenes. I played mostly solo enchanter, and then 2-box with a shaman. Starting over now, I am only slightly better than a complete noob.
What web references are you using, to find out quests, items, etc? I have found it pretty difficult to find information that is relevant to the "1999"-ness of the progression server.
Also, what are you doing for armor and weapons for your toons?
Korruptor, we have similar teams. I'm only going for five though. I have shaman, enchanter, cleric, shadowknight, magician (dark elves all, except for the troll shaman). I also had a necromancer, but swapped him out for the magician.
Since you are playing almost the same team, do you have any good tips (setup, macros, quests, etc.)? Which toon are you driving from? At present I'm driving from my SK, but once I get to level to start pulling, I am thinking of driving from my enchanter, for pulling and CC.
Every class with permanent pets except for enchanter can order pets to /pet attack
I use http://everquest.allakhazam.com for everything. I don't have an easy answer for separating what is classic EQ as this progression server isn't a pure classic EQ.
My enchanter is my crafter and can make patchwork armor (leather) which my SK and Cleric are wearing. Ruined Wolf pelts make smaller armor for like Dark Elves, Ruined Bear Pelts make large armor for Trolls and Ogres. I kill every wolf I can find for hides, keep them all in your bank, sell them to others if your not going to craft (not a good idea).
Here is a very good guide on tailoring armor:

Patchwork recipes detailed:
http://everquest.allakhazam.com/sear...chwork#Recipes
Weapons, well I kill every skelly I see with a weapon because it's 100% chance to drop that weapon. I looted a halberd and converted it from a rusty halberd to a tarnished one which raised it's stats. Sharpening weapons is great for raising black smithing.
http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/ar...r=040100000000
To find the sharpening stones you will need to check some smithing supply vendors until you find them. They are 3cp for my enchanter. Take the stones and the rusty weapons to a forge and add one stone and one weapon. To open the forge right click it and then click experiment, in that window add the two items and combine. If you fail you get your weapon back and it's still rusty so just keep trying. You will burn through your stones. I kink it took me 25 stones for 7 weapons.
Everyone follows my SK currently and one day I will use my enchanter to calm a room but everyone will still be /following my SK so I don't drag them with the enchanter :)
SK's can FD pull too which is useful.
Macro's
Follow:
/pause 6,/target Xavier
/pause 1,/follow
/follow
/pet follow
I throw in the extra follow for good measure. The delay is in tenths of a second and is highly recommended with the lag in EQ. If you're not familiar with EQ macro's it can be confusing but the pause, even though it's in front, is executed after the action and spacing is critical. There can be no space between the , and the /
Assist
First enable auto attack on your alts via "/assist on" (at low levels this is a good thing but at the higher levels you won't want your caster's in melee)
Then the macro:
/pause 5,/target Xavier
/pause 5/assist
/pet attack
Nuke
/pause 15,/cast 1 (top most spell slot with a 1.5 sec pause for fizzle time)
/pause 50,/cast 1 (recast if it fizzled)
etc
It's totally permissible to macro a battery of attacks so go for it (more for alts). Start with a /stand, add the pauses and account for the fizzle delay so one click fires a spell with a pause just enough to account for the fizzle time and then another attempt to fire the spell etc, repeat and then have the caster /sit.
I added an enchanter just to keep the mana going faster and too allow for less sitting.
Tips, well, avoid social creatures. I'm not really doing any quests yet, just crafting and grinding. If the mob is yellow I send the mage pets in to soften the mob but and then run in with my SK and /taunt. Use your tank to pull with a bow or spell (not a snare).
I hope this helps!
Shoot me a tell if you're on Darkpaw: Xavier, Reinhart, Draxl, Quade, Tags...
Thanks for the solid info!
Also, do you run from a single installation of EQ or multiple?
I run from a single, and I noticed that my key binds are all shared among all five accounts. For instance, if I bind F10 to hotbar 2, slot 0, after I exit, all five of my accounts now have F10 bound to hotbar 2, slot 0. I can change them on the fly to be different while logged in, but the last account to log out saves the keybinds, and the next load, everyone gets those keybinds.
This means the keybinds are locally stored, but I looked among the .ini files and nothing stands out as containing keybinds, and looking through most if not all of them reveals no keybinds. Assumign they store them locally in a file in the EQ folder, then multiple installations should cure this issue and allow me to have differnt keys bound to the same slots on different toons/accounts.
Thats my problem, I thought I could /pet attack with the enchanter. No problem then. Should I make a second team I will use a couple mages to plow over stuff.
I have been ignoring most of the quests and just grinding. Things like gnoll fangs are in, so I do that quest. Otherwise I am challenged enough just trying to level.
For assisting I use /assist charname . As long as your assist is in your group/raid is works well. Just don't forget the pause after assist due to server lag.
I've changed it up and run my group by my cleric and replaced the SK with a Necro.
3 Mages, 1 Ench, 1 Necro, 1 Cleric
Very good damage and good synergy with the utility between classes.
Gate FTW!
Funny -- no tank class. I am guessing you are tanking using mage pets. Mage pets are crazy that's for sure.
I am holding with SK, enchanter, cleric, magician, shaman. It makes a very synergistic team. It would be nice to have 5/5 gate though. If you ever get on Vulak, the toon names are Kapok, Kintra, Kyala, Kyleana, Joxtor.
I'm using lower heals on cleric and shaman and they are doing double duty dps/heal. Shaman/cleric essentially act as a single healer when needed, with low cost 2x heals. Shaman and cleric provide buffs, especially from shaman. Shaman and chanter proivde fight-time control, buffs, debuffs (speed, slow, cc). Magician has great DD as well as amazing pet damage Everything dies so fast I don't use DoTs.
I went to Crushbone yesterday. My team was all level 14. Throne room was camped with a team of 15s and an 18 monk. Led by some mouthy punk, worried I was going to steal their camp. I just parked my team on the side and watched them. They had six for a while and even with six and a level 18, had a hard time with it. They went down to five, and both the Prophet and Emperor spawned same time. They pulled and wiped.
I took over the room and tore it up, with ease. Prophet and Emperor were red to me, but the DD output of my team is crazy. Debuffed with shaman and enchanter, and unloaded DDx4, throwing in the very few heals needed. Looted and got the chainmail vest. While looting, Lord Darish popped, and went down in a flash. Looted him for the dwarven axe. My SK is very happy now.
Camped out to log back in later. When I came back, same mouthy main guy camping throne room with a different set of people. They had five, all 15+. They were terribad. Crush was yellow to me and he had just his regular guards, no Prophet or anything else tough. They fought him in the tower section and wiped. I took over the room again and mopped up the floor. Crush dropped another chainmail vest. Cleric is now sporting it.
Next spawn of Crush was red, and he was accompanied by Ambassador Dvinn, also major red. I pulled them both into the throne room and unloaded, just when the throne room started to repop with oracles and emissaries. Tough.
Ambassador must have been level 19-20 because my DD spells were being resisted big time. Had to heal a lot this time, but Dvinn went down, and Crush, though red too, went down quickly after. No team deaths. Got another chainmail vest. As I was resting to recover, Darish popped again, this time white con, and went down in about 6 seconds of DD spells. He dropped the 2H dwarven axe this time. Nice.
I was going to do the screaming mace stuff, but the orc warlord seems to be a fairly rare spawn, I looked all over the castle island for a while killing his placeholders, but never spawned. I'll probably head back later.
Where would you recommend going at 15?
Any tips on gear goals?
It has been SO long since I've done EQ, I've forgotten nearly everything. I don't know what equipment to get, or where to get it anymore. Allakhazam seems the best reference, but it has somewhat limited utility with respect to the progression server, and I am adverse to paying premium membership there.
lol, started already. My friend and I are starting to dual-box for Fippy. He's on a druid and enchanter, I'm going with wizard and mage. My third friend just started up his paladin, so we'll have a tank. I have a single boxed enchanter abit further up, but it has fallen behind on the leveling rush so getting tougher to find groups. Probably going to be folded into the 6th slot for this group. (2 enchanters though, idk.)
9 Cleric on Fippy. Hit up Dooder. If you didn't want to go with dual enchanters.
Yep, no need for a tank. The pets are tough and since I'm focused on heals and keeping them buffed they wont go down easily. I've easily broken orc camps when they were all yellow and red; tank not required (and over-rated imo)!
Chanter stuns/debuffs, mage's nuke, necro snares/dots and my cleric can fear and heal. No exp loss if the pet tanks die :)
Good set up Korruptor.
Hey, for any Dark Elves out there, please carefully reconsider hunting in Crushbone!
I recall making this mistake years ago... the Crushbone Orc's are allies of the Indigo Brotherhood, the warrior guild in Neriak and you will ruin your faction with them!
Think of Crushbone Orcs as being the enemy of my enemy...
Awesome UI for EQ:
http://www.eqinterface.com/downloads...fo.php?id=5518
It can be a bit daunting but I personally love it.
So I made a 4x necro team and ran it to L6. Very easy to operate pets do great damage after giving them rusty weapons. I didn't even use the mana feed buff.
Then I made a 4x mage team lead by an enchanter. One word, rediculous. First pet at level 2 was air pet. Four air pets were blowing up everything they came across. If a mob was red I would toss in a nuke to finish them.
I am going to run a shaman and enchanter with the pet teams and expect to level them very quickly.
Now that the noob armor is in, this combo will be even more op at low levels. :)
Hey everybody. Started up on Vulak cuz Fippy was full by the time I had gotten home from work.
Started a solo necro, thinking that soloing was going to be the way to go. Oops! Didn't realize that grouping was going to be such easy experience.
Well, I'm level 48, and in a raiding guild. All the raiding I've been doing on classic targets has kept me from hitting level 50, but I'm not too concerned. I"ll get their eventually, but I'll just have full planar/dragon loot in the mean time. :)
Just started 2 mages that I want to box together up to level 50 to go along with my necro. If I could afford to re-activate more accounts I'd totally box more mages. They are insane powerful and allow for the killing of a lot of different things. Guild was killing level 61 Dark Elves in Kithicor for some loot. Earth pets tanking dragons, etc.
Anyway, even though its only 2 boxes I'm looking to be able to setup ISBoxer to help with boxing my 3. Might jump into it tonight and see how it does. I play on a 46" LCD TV, in 1980x1080 (or whatever that high res is), and so I think I could do really well with doing a split screen to see all the toons at the same time.
If your on the fence and really don't care please vote no. If you really want them then feel free to vote that way. I'm not trying to start a debate on whether the game is worse or better with the old corpse run, just voicing my desire to see it stay the way it currently is.
Think about the corpse runs in the plain of air... raiding in general... being trained by boxing-haters....
I hope you're all enjoying the progression servers! I know I am!
I voted no x6 a few days ago. :)
Korruptor
I love your idea of tanking mage pets but I'm not sure how far that will allow you to go. Once you get to the 40's and 50's, the mobs hit so much harder I think you'll have trouble.
I ran a 6-man group of SHD, CLR, SHM, ENC, DRU, and ROG back in the day. Now I think I'd run SHD, CLR, SHM, ENC, DRU, WIZ.
Synergy of that group is that SHM, CLR, DRU and ENC have stackable buffs. ENC for Tash, Clarity. SHM for slows. 2 Rezzers, 2 gaters. And SHD are the "stickiest" tank in EQ. Their DoT/Snare is enough to overcome the aggro of Tash, Malo and Turgur easily.
I see your concern but I'm working off of advice from someone who was boxing 5 mages on a current server with a merc healer. His team of mages is 85. He rolled 5 mages again on Darkpaw along with a cleric. His experience is that there is little he can't do. He suggested leveling exclusively with air pets because they tend to chain stun their target thus the target moves little and does little damage to the pets.
Time will tell but I am really enjoying my 3 mages, necro, enchanter and cleric. My cleric leads and with all plate and HP buffs and keeps everyone alive. From 19-21 now I've been able to manage aggro in taking down the level 27 The Guard Captian, BoneCracker and the level 27 Officer Grush. I've learned how to manage the hate and to time the nukes to keep the hate on the pets and with me micro managing the heals it's worked very well.
The Cleric lull's, heals and pulls...
The Chanter debuffs, slows and buffs (breeze's, etc)
The 3 Mages supply the pets and the pet toys along with free food.
The Necro uses pet toys, snares, scent's and dots.
And they all GATE!
Cheers!
Voted no on al of my toons as well. I really hope that it doesn't pass.
I'm going to be rolling up an SK to go with my alts.. in the end will be SK, RNG, CLR, ENC, MAG, MAG.
Enchanter slows, now that research is in, is enough, and the earth pets can tank in a pinch if necessary. So could ranger.
Mages hit level 16 last night. The SK is a new addition, as a buddy dropped out, so gotta make a new SK to go with them, but that shouldn't be too hard to level up.
I am going to check this out with one toon initially and see if I want to multibox it. Is anyone on Vulak that is multiboxing? Perhaps we can get a guild going?
I see people doing an all mage group and no tank? From what I remember (I only played EQ from initial release up to Gates of Discord before quitting) is that in further expansions a slow from a shaman or enchanter is absolutely a must! The mobs in the later expansions hit like a truck and pets would get eaten alive.
It'll be a while before pets start to get eaten alive. When Kunark drops, we'll have the mage epic pet that doesn't sputter out until around Luclin time. It's about the time that Mages start dropping in power. But wizards are in full force awesome by that time as well.
I'm thinking about boxing this, i tried to play one toon but the leveling experience is sooo slow and since I 10 box WoW, playing one toon just doesn't do it for me.
Thinking about the following combo
-Tank
-Healer (Cleric)
-CCer (Enchanter maybe?)
-Mage
-Necro
-Wizard
I'll have to take a look at the synergy for this combo but it's my rough draft.
I'm 5-boxing on Vulak and am in the mid 30s now.
I'm running:
Enchanter
Cleric
Druid
Mage
Mage
Works very well and I may add a SK or Warrior eventually if I decide to get a 6th account.
My names on Vulak are Menza, Infinite, Aanza, Enza and Ynza. Send me a tell if I'm on. It would be cool to hear from someone here.
Any boxers on Vulak'Aerr playing European prime time?
Perhaps with a guild ?
/Dunq
EQ Main char Utaladin ............ Random name generator ftw
It's a good line up but I think most folks would drop the necro for another mage. Another mage will greatly improve your DPS over a necro as necro spells are long DoT's and very little burst damage save for the PBAOE's they share with clerics.
I took a necro for one reason: fear kiting and eventually hate kiting if required. In my setup the necro is the slot that will be shared with any tanks i create and was originally filled by my SK. His DPS are weak and the only thing he contributes is the poison dots and snares to keep runners from running. Eventually, when grinding in an open area he will snare and my cleric, chanter or necro will fear the target with all the pets eating at it's back side.
In my opinion they have little to offer a group and mine will be subbed out when I can twink out a tank and PL him. I have my reasons for taking one but at times I wish I had a wizard instead. Mmmm ports!
On Vulak, I have created a guild named Nostalgia Seekers. It's just me at the moment, but all boxers are welcome. I figure we will eventually want to gather together so eventually we can do some raids. Raid mobs right now are permacamped, but perhaps with Kunark we will have more opportunity.
My lead toons are named Kapok (shadowknight) and Niestra (enchanter). If you are on, give me a holler.
I have two 5-box teams on Vulak. Both rip through everything I touch with ease, taking multiple concurrent mobs 5-6 levels above. I have been ripping through Paw with each team (independently), keeping an area of about 24 gnolls (mostly yellow/red con) cleared and sometimes could run around and poach some from far off if I cleared the 24 before the next repop.
The synergy comes from enchanter and shaman, with buffs, debuffs, slows, speed-ups, clarity/breeze, heals, and SoW. On team 1, the mage pets do a great job tanking. Also, I can charm a yellow con mob with enchanter and use as a pet, giving the team 4 superpets. Also all five can gate.
Having a shaman and an enchanter on your team in my opinion makes any team great. Adding a magician makes it even greater. Your remaining two can be anything, though if you have just one mage, you might want a tank class soyou can ping-pong tough mobs betwen the tank and the magician pet.
I have gone to using 3x air pets, because between their stuns and color shift/mez from the enchanter, mobs don't do a lot of damage, and I just rip them for 20%-50% hp every casting cycle from the three mages. Blue cons take 1-2 casts. White and yellow cons take 2-3 casts. Reds take 3-5 casts. Deep reds take all five toons casting their ass off, but I still take them down. With team 1, I can pull four reds concurrently and mess up CC and still survive, though it does push the limits.
Same synergy on team 2, but for team 2, I have two healers, and with this team the healers do double duty heal and dps. They dps until a heal is needed, then both cast their heal same time, allowing me to use a lower heal that costs a minimal amount of mana, so they both can heal just about forever. SK so far is a great tank. With enchanter stuns, and super buffing from shaman and enchanter, coupled with super debuffs on target mobs, my tank barely takes damage.
Team 1: (lv 30 currently)
Enchanter (lead, puller, CC), Magician x 3, Shaman
Team 2: (lv 28 currently)
Shadowknight (lead, puller), Cleric, Enchanter, Shaman, Magician
Both teams lack easy destination porting (wiz/druid), but I don't really need it. Running anywhere on SoW makes it a non-issue.
Team 1 lacks a rezzer, but I very rarely die, and when I do, it is always because of a colossal overpull, and in that case if I had a rezzer he would die anyway.
Team 2 cannot full gate because of the SK, so this is somewhat of an impediment when I'm done with an area and want to quickly return to my bind point.
Well it seems the majority of boxers are on Vulak.
I'd re-roll my 6 on Vulak but I'd be walking away from a fair amount of hard work in getting them all geared and spells etc.
If anyone could lend me a little plat to get started (of course I would pay it back later), I will switch to Vulak. I just can't stand having to grind garbage for a little gold for my first spells.
Any sponsors? :)
Mystic,
I've been toying the idea around of what classes to use and I finallly came to my conclusion. I'll join your guild so we can do some raid bosses eventually.
Korruptor,
I just started so I can't help you with the plat, otherwise I would.
My final team composition is as follows:
Ogre Warrior- Pure damage mitigation and tanking ability
Dark Elf Cleric- Pure healing and hp buffs
Dark Elf Enchanter- CC, Breeze, Pacify, utility
Troll Shaman- Slows, Buffs, Debuffs, dots, SOW
Halfling Druid- Ports, DD, Dots, buffs, healing if necessary
Dark Elf Wizard- DD, Ports, Escape
This is the combo with the best synergy that I can think of. I know it would be nice to get a mage in there, but mages aren't that great in the later expansions, I'm looking for long term effectiveness.
The biggest issue i can see I'll have with this combo, is getting us all together during the early levels, it's quite a pain running all these toons to a central location so we can get xp together. I tried all human toons but, I have the same problem because human druids start a long ways off as well as humans can't be shamans.
changed my group makeup so many times
Enc, Clr, 4 Mages
Bhork
Chork
Fhork
Ghork
Jhork
Bhork is my main (lead toon) whisper me in game.
