View Full Version : Scaling down. When 5 is just too much.

I have been dual-boxing for a long time now. Only recently did I move up to tri-boxing and as of late penta-boxing. I am actually kind of burnt out on the penta boxing though for a couple reasons. 1) The attention gets to be too much. Most people don't notice if you are 2/3 boxing but 4/5 they do. 2) Collection quest. I can stomach them when I am 3 boxing, but they make you want to gouge your eyes out x 5. I know, I know just skip them but honestly I like to do a lot of quest.

From the RAF I was doing groups of 5 but a couple nights ago I scaled back to 2/3 boxing. Well actually 3/4 boxing as I still bring my 70 Druid in to fly thru collection quest by killing a massive number of mobs quickly.

I didn't roll back because it was harder. I actually am more active playing when I am just running 3 toons. I am doing separate classes too.

Have many of you went up to 5 boxing and then decided that you had more fun just dual or tri boxing?

I went straight from 1 to 5, so I haven't tried 2, 3, or 4 boxing... collection quests are definitely bad while 5 boxing (I didn't do any pre-outlands but now I'm doing the first few collection outlands quests cause I need the gear and it is painful as hell).

I don't think I would want to 2-4 box though...the whole reason I decided to MB in the first place was for soloing heroics and 5v5 arena, and with less than 5 that becomes a chore/impossible. Whenever I don't want to 5 box I just play a single character.

I'm sure a lot of people "enjoy" 2-3 boxing more than 5 boxing though as it certainly would be less tedious.

Picking up 150 pieces of zepplin parts isn't fun.

But I trudged through.

Collecting 150 naga claws was annoying.

But I did it.

Just put on some music and get in the zone.

Collecting 150 naga claws was annoying. You my friend have patients by the truck load. If I have to collect more than 2 of anything I drop it. The naga claws have caused the demise of more than a few solo players let alone MB'ers

At least Naga Claws are (or nearly) a 100% drop rate.

One reason I'm playing multiple classes.. so if I "have" to do a colleciton quest for gear..then maybe it'll only be for 1 or 2 of them. :)

I five box so I can solo instances at level and at a pace that I can enjoy the content. I can't stand pugging and play at such limited/odd hours its hard to find guildies at the same level.

3-boxing rocks. I have 4 accounts but my friend plays on one. And yeah collection quest are horrible specially when its not 100% drop rate. Got to 61 yesterday and I did the bead collection quest at the Temple for alliance it was not 100% but it was not less than 50% so that's good, took me a bit to get them still. I avoided as many collection quest while leveling up with RAF to 60. Took me longer than some others but was still learning the ropes about boxing and had a good time I might start a second team, maybe some mages and a druid for healing. Currently my 61 team is a SP and 2 locks, fun to fear everything even the lv 70 druid that ganked me yesterday, I was surprised to take him down as far as I did even though he killed me rather quick.

I don't feel like scaling back helps anything. I always still have the 5+ characters to play, so even if I leave them out I still have them sitting out missing the quest and slowing my DPS. But I don't ever find having 5 to be an annoyance at all, either

I play 2 boxes exclusively on 2 separate computers. I treat them as separate characters. I have been raiding on my main account while healing an instance on my other, just bouncing my attention back and forth. I find this much more exciting and quicker to react than having to swap windows or rely on pre-set macros. This is how I enjoyed EQ, CoH, and now WoW. I just don't like having any of my characters auto-following and working from macros. I enjoy this playstyle more but that is MY reference. 5 boxing looks amazingly fun but its not my thing personally. :D

I've been dual-boxing recently to level up my pally/druid, which is a lot more fun than 5-boxing for sure. But it applies to levelling only - I don't mind the gear-grind with 5 chars, it's mostly the levelling and even while levelling you have the option to dungeon crawl instead of questing. The primary reasons I 5-box are:

1) The challenge of doing content made for single-boxing
2) Avoiding PUG's
3) It allows you to do stuff by yourself and you don't need to accomodate anyone else, but you can still choose to let other people in for the social aspect, you just don't _have to_ :-)

Most of these only applies to 5-boxing, so while I agree that 5-boxing can be a pain while levelling, it's very much worth it once you max out your level (IMO).

I play both 5 toon and 1. 5-box to do instances and I raid with my warlock and my warrior, and separate times. But I don't think I would ever go down to 3-boxing. It's either 1 or 5 for me.

The concept of grinding or collection quest never bothered me ... go play EQ for a few years and grinding just becomes second nature

I currently two box, haven't been going for that long either...but I have two views:

1) Dual Boxing is tough enough, I couldn't imagine 5 boxing. So I want to stay with just two...maybe 3.

2) The whole point of me wanting to multibox was to be able to run through instances by myself. So 2-3 boxing just doesn't cut it, so I want to upgrade to 5.

I'm so torn. :(

Only time I'm not 5 boxing is if I'm 3v3ing for fun, or if my g/f is doing an instance with me. Sometimes ill 4 box in BG's to queue with my g/f. I feel if you have 5 accounts why aren't you 5 boxing? 2 or 3 boxing seems to be a waste of time you can maye do BGs / 2v2 / 3v3 ... and quests/dailies WOOHOOO. You have to group with scrubs to do any instances, and the less people you have in a BG the higher the chance that that slot is filled by a moron.

Yeah, 100%. That's why it's "annoying" and not "making me rip off my own hands to turn in."

Just found an area of land that I could start at one spot and work in a circle and by the time I got back to where I started, they had started respawning. Repeat ad nauseum.

Now, the Gathering the Reagents quest was excruciating but I'm a glutton for punishment.

I'm taking a break from questing to get the 6 repeats of the Wintersaber meat quest out of the way now.

I'm crazy.

I 4-5x box. I really like running with 4xShamans in BGs (and arena with healer), but I also enjoy doing instances with a buddy. 4xShamans in an instance are great because just about any class coming along is helpful. I do like the social aspect of running an instance with a partner.

I have the Prot Pally + 4xShaman setup as well, but I just never have gotten into it. I don't need a ton of badge gear, so it's never been something I've poured much time and energy into.

My most recent team (now L68) is a Priest+4xHunter setup. It's been a lot of fun for leveling, but leveling is mostly a solo endeavor anyhow. I can see the priest getting minimal playtime once they're all L70, however. It's nice to be able to run with just 4 DPS in BGs, and I'm not going to be doing any solo 5v5 arena by controlling everyone.

Preference-wise, I enjoy 4x more, but I have to admit that it's nice to be able to field a full team from time to time.

The 150 nagas was one of the easier collection quests I did. You could clear out 30 naga in 10 minutes if you were working quickly. Under an hour, and do it along with other naga killing quests.

If you scale down then you aren't going to be able to do instances as well. I like the fact I don't have to get help with instances. That is the main reason I went with 5 boxing.

Same.

Though pounding my head on the wall trying to figure out how to fight a boss was an unintended side-effect.

I started with 3-boxing to just get the feel of it, and it took me two days to start penta-boxing myself. After that, I'm not going back. I have tank+dps+healer in my mainteam and 2 teams of hunters and mages, and for me, this is the shit, I couldn't imagine doing anything but 1 or 5. Only thing would maybe be 4 + a friend.

I was getting the BLAHs over 5 boxing since I am boosting my shammies. I took them out of the instances and into the sunlight for a bit the other day and now I'm excited about them again.

I love 5 boxing, but since i have just hit 60 with my team (and finished the Winterspring frostsaber rep grind) i decided to dual box some mages using the RAF scheme. this makes a refreshing change from running 5 as the whole experience just seems to be less hassle,as you only have two toons to worry about rather than 5. ( i do miss the extra fire power though and the one shotting of mobs 8) ).

at the end of the day it doesn't matter how many characters you run, just as long as you have fun doing it!

I look back fondly on eq ... but looking back how on earth did I ever play it
I played eq from release and the ct/solB/guk camps were insane. People camping hallways for 3 non named spawns that spawned once every 24mins.

There were some good things about eq. I actually liked the random wandering ubers (usually giants) in noob zones and the fact that mobs chased forever. The complete lack of bigwigs/dbm. heck people raided on modems and didn't even use voice comms.

The other benefit of this quest is Cenarion rep if you are not honored. I ground out the rep 1st before doing the other quests...

"1) Dual Boxing is tough enough, I couldn't imagine 5 boxing. So I want to stay with just two...maybe 3."

Heh - and it begins....

I started off planning to two box, then set up a third account to transfer a 70 onto for boosting. Then I thought "Well HANG ON" I could boost up another team to give me 3 on each account and now I'm working out my new PC for 5 boxing.

It'll get ya!

Well I was 4 and 5 boxing for some time, then I took a few months break to build my bankroll in Poker ;)
A few days ago The Rupt Brothers came back but with a little change. I started to think why I was so burned out after a lot of the sessions of 5-boxing HC instances and after PvPing, then I thought I'd just try to chill with 3 of the Rupt Bro's (shamans).
After a few days I must say I really enjoy "only" 3-boxing, less lag for one (only playing now with 1 comp), a little less cost (good thing with the world economics :D ). I've started to grind for cash to get my epic mounts, only 8000g to go, and to get some money for WOTLK.
This is what I have been doing with my 3 shamans (S2, badge gear):

- Plowing through instances like Mana-Tombs normal
- Dailies (quick and good cash)
- Grinding for shadow motes in Nagrand
- Getting tradeskills up

Now this isn't much but I really like the speed of which I can clear the normal instances. I haven't died a single death yet (not even close) so might start with the "Push it to the limit" mentally soon regarding to instances.

Might get back to frapping a bit with the 3-box setup just to keep the interest up through boring times.

When I went up to 5 boxes, I found I could run normal instances to rep grind (and kill some bosses) all on my own. Through some stubbornness I succeeded in moving through heroic Slave Pens, and killing two bosses for badges. After about 5 upgrades for the team, I'm finding that I'm clearing heroics faster and faster, which in turn are bringing in more badges of justice - to lead to more, better, gear.

I'm loving it. :)

The only negative about 5-boxing is that I've found (generally) that I can do better on most fights (not bosses) with just my own 5-pack than when I add in a few friends. Also, that badge lure is very strong to keep going on all five toons, so sometimes when I *could* bring along others, I find I don't want to because I can gain badges on all five toons... :(

The concept of grinding or collection quest never bothered me ... go play EQ for a few years and grinding just becomes second natureHaha, too true. I don't even flich on collection quests that are drops from mob kills, as I just fall back into EQ grind mode. The ones where you have to pick up drops from the ground are the ones that annoy me any more (the Rocket Car Parts quest in Shimmering flats made me want to poke my eyes out).

I started playing 1 toon to see how WoW was and promptly fired up my other computers and running a 5-man getting the hang of the macroing and such. I just skip collection quests and when people talk to me, I go ahead and keep it brief, but I think talking to others that are curious helps dispel any myths about multiboxing.

I dual-boxed for over a year then my wife wanted to give the game a try so I bought a 3rd copy of wow, she lost interest after a week so I started to box 3 then after about a week I went to a full 5 and have not looked back since. I could never go to less than 5 again. But it is funny how everyone notices you and follows you around, hell I kind of like the attention anyway. Its fun to go into SW and put on a show for everyone, of course you get the haters along with others but all that is is jealousy and when you call them on it they shut up real fast. ;)

DarthLucid

Yeah, I've 5-boxed for quite a while, it was fun up to a point, but I don't really play that much, so I eventually dropped back to 2-3, depending on my mood. It feels a lot easier to just drop in and play 20 minutes whenever you want without a lot of set up to do anything. But then, I'm not obsessed about equipment, and to a large extent just like having all classes, which I have now have on both sides, since I've only rarely used multiples of the same class.

It's pretty normal I think :)
