I do just that. I use old Pentium M single core notebooks to run Minion's wow sessions. Not the greatest ever FPS and not really the way to go for pvp, but it does have a number of advantages.

Price: You can pick up written off, three-four year old notebooks much cheaper than todays state of the art machines.

Power consumption: My notebooks AC-Adapters eats a max of 60W, times four is 240W, which is probably less than many of you use for the power supply of one desktop.

Heat: These old notebooks have a lower termal design power than the current ones, they just do not get as hot and are leagues below a fancy current desktop processor.

I am overall rather happy with my solution. Naturally I am happy to admit that a part of that is due to this solution being available to me at no cost - which is a big plus for me that certainly does not apply to everyone. =]
