Thread: XKeys Question

    Default XKeys Question

Hello All. I'm going to purchase the Xkeys Pro as I build up my 5 box setup. I'm kinda confused on the USB vs PS/2 comments on multicast. I just built my computer and am running a x48BT2 w/ 2G 1066Mhz DDR3 and a single Radeon 4850...anyway now that I've tickled my epeen, my computer has no PS/2 connection. Am I to assume I'll have issues buying the Xkeys pro USB to go along with my G15??
Thanks - and good information here - enough to cause a nose bleed.

My usb one works great, but it does not work with some games, like CoH and SWG, but works fine with WoW and LOTRO, EQ2 does also but takes more tweaking.

Get the USB if you're running it on 1 PC, ps2 you have to manually program each key, the USB version works similar to the G-keys on g11's and g15's. If you plan on using a KVM over multiple machines then get the ps/2.

I recently ordered a PS/2 X-keys, mainly because I wanted to have many options open to me in the future, in case I did want to switch to hardware. The only downside for me is needing another keyboard to program it with, but that's a small issue.

As for with your G15, I don't see why you would have lots of issues with it. I use a G11. But I have yet to receive my X-keys.

Oh, remember, you can get a ps/2 -> USB adaptor if you do decide to use the PS/2 X-keys.

USB is 2-way communication. This means if you have more than 1 computer it will likely not work.

PS2 works for as many computers as you want, since it is 1-way communication.

So if you think you will EVER use more than 1 physical computer with your xkeys, get the ps2.

Damn - already ordered the USB - oh well - hopefully I like keyclone or hotkey net - sill looking at pros and cons. I take it "physical" is the key word meaning USB wont work in your set-up as you have the "hardware" solution? But using one of those programs with the usb xkeys is fine.

    thanks for the feedback all.

Well, I have three computers and the USB version + KeyClone... I don't have any troubles with it...

I think Vyn was alluding towards hardware boxing.

I have the USB version as well, and it'll work for as long as you either connect it directly to the machine that's to receive the programmed commands (which is what I do) or use software boxing.

The preference some people have for the PS/2 version stems from the fact that it's easier to split the signal with a regular KVM type device for hardware boxing.

If you never intend to go full hardware boxing (or if you go full hardware but don't need to broadcast the XKeys to multiple machines) then there's no down-side at all to the USB version.
