Thread: Voice control

Given the interest in this, I think I will pick up my project again and see if I can get a simple test version going in a week or so. It would work by simply mapping a voice command to a given keystroke or series of keystokes like a slash command (no delays of course, don't want to be breaking the rules). I can see some difficulty in mapping certain commands to specific instances of the game, so that might take a little longer. Note that you'd also be able to send chat messages as this was the original purpose and already works. This program would require Vista, since it has built in speech recognition. XP does have a speech recognition library it might be able to use, but I think that library is pretty bad.
Also, if you already have Vista, don't waste your money on dragon! The speech recognition that's built into Vista is quite good in my experience.

    I couldn't [url='http://www.nuance.com/talk/compare/
find[/url] the "pro" version any more. They only seem to offer a Preferred or a Standard edition.
I wonder if the standard edition can tranlsate speech into keystrokes the way you describe above, or if it's purely a dictation device....
Sorry yes, its the Prefered Edition. I'm not sure if the standard edition has the Custom Command centre. Its the Custom Commands that I use. For the most part I only use 10% of its features.

It is an interesting idea If I were ever so inclined to use something like this, I would probably use it for those spells I don't use very often, but need in important circumstances. or follow :P
That was my original intent, to only use it for spells I rarely use. But once I started using it I wanted to do more and more with it. It made me lazy in a way, why move my left index finger to press button "A" when I can say "Water Shield". LOL

I'd love to look into this once you have a working version. You're right the speech engine in Vista is pretty good - once you have a application that utilises it properly. Dragon is very expensive if you're only going to use it for giving simply voice commands for multiboxing. I'm lucky enough that work have a copy and without breaching license I can install and use it on my home computer(s). I've tried similar applications that utilise the Vista speech engine but their features were very limited and in some cases the response times were in excess of 1-2 seconds.

Well I had it running pretty well in my 32-bit Vista development environment. I can specify string commands or key presses from an XML file. However when I moved it over to my 64 bit Vista that I use for boxing, it failed. I think I know what the problem is, just need to get visual studio set up to try it.

Another option is to use the Vista speech recognition feature with the beta Macro tools. The macro tools allow you to create custom commands for Vista speech recognition. Its not overly complicated to do, but for those who want/need a nice WYSIWYG edit it may be a bit complicated. Though I'm sure we can develop some class templates, all they would need to do is modify a field in an XML file.

I posted about some reasonably priced voice control software that I've tried out (after being inspired by this very thread).

vrcommander.com $10. Requires no training. Works beautifully with keyclone and is super easy to setup.

I did try to make a fraps video, but it captures the game sound, but not my voice on the mike so isn't worth posting.

This one is made for vista only (not tried it on x64 yet, but it did well on 32.)

I installed some voice recognition software last night and played around with my lowbie locks a bit. OMG I am so going to set this up for my pally/shaman team. Sometimes I get a bit frazzled when getting ganked and really frazzled in BGs and think this might help me run the team smoother. Can't wait to get home this afternoon!!!
