    here comes the FUD
Great program, the DRM kills me though.
you mean like wow.exe ? it 'phones home' every second... since you are connected to their servers
Hope he never goes on vacation.
i haven't in 20 years... thanks for the concern.

and if you are reformatting your machine weekly, i think transferring your keyclone license would be the least of your concerns

There is no reason an application that has nothing to do with the internet should be accessing it. It is not an internet application. It is single-PC or LAN.

Relying on user intervention to "re-allow" you to use something you paid for is just wrong, regardless. I shouldn't have to "get permission" at any sort of interval to use software I've paid for.

This is why piracy is rampant amongst primarily the gaming PC sector. So much nonsense that inconveniences the paying user.. or you could go the alternate route and get the game with none of the garbage and none of the hassles.

KeyClone itself is an excellent program, it is just a shame that it comes with such a lousy "activation" scheme.

lol...just wait until all your productivity apps are web-based (100% activation every time you launch the apps). :P
    Now playing: WoW (Garona)

Then they legitimately use the internet. They are accessible from any computer I happen to be on. There is no "activation." They'll Just Work. They won't randomly break if I decide to switch computers or reformat. Web apps worth using will certainly use multiple datacenters for redundancy. They'll never be inaccessible. (eg, google docs)

Apples and oranges between web apps and keyclone, I'd say.

edit: Ahh sorry, I apologize for completely derailing the thread. And in all honestly, keyclone would solve OP's problem #1 and indirectly solve problem #2.

    *pssst*

web apps will require you to log in and have an active, yearly, subscription in order to use them.

so... you're saying i should do this with keyclone?

and btw... who says keyclone doesn't work with the internet? sure it does. (i'll leave the 'how' up to you...)

edit: LAN and WAN .. no real difference, besides latency

    Hi everyone,
first post I'm making here ;-)

Anyway regarding the keyclone verification system. In my old Ultima Online days I recall a program called UOAssist, which used the same principle but was liked to the unique UO-Game id rather than the PC id. Which means, it was easy transferable because was linked by account. Now I don't know much about the technical details behind WOW but wouldn't it be possible to extract some kind of unique ID based on your WOW account? If so, perhaps you could set up client side key check which was calculated for that specific account upon regristration.

    Keyclone server goes down?
For the 2 months that i have been boxing keyclone has only gone down 3 times. The problem isn't with keyclone it was that i wasn't connected to the internet, which wasn't a problem if i cannot connect i cannot play wow, but other then user error i haven't had any connection problems with keyclone. If there ever was, rob, would let us know before it even happens.

Rob are you using a third party to check the license or your own computer. If it is your computer when was the last time it was rebooted lol.

not exactly. UOAssist played with the TCP stream... and was able to recognize when UO was logged in. blizzard would flip if i did that. besides, which account would it hook to? i run mine with 5 wow accounts running on the same machine at the same time.

?( i paid big money for the OS on this computer (and the 3 others)... and moving it to another machine is iffy. they also track the system-id (or whatever microsoft calls it) and attach guids to them. those guids are in every word doc and excel sheet you create... so they can track which machine a doc came from (i believe the guids may also be embedded in the .net produced code). and if i tried to change my motherboard / cpu... the OS would just stop working and would require a full re-install, which would lose all my registry settings.

and don't forget, wow checks your account every time you log in. so does yahoo, icq, aim, and even vent. only difference here is, i'm not requiring a log in

if you don't like keyclone verifying itself once at startup, then you won't like HKN's constant calling home (every couple of minutes)
and if you don't like paying for keyclone once, then you really wouldn't like paying $3.95 for HKN every month.. which is the plan once they get enough users using it (another reason to call home every few minutes)

oh, and don't forget the bit about how it could get your accounts banned...

For quests and the like, I love the MultiBoxer addon. Open up the dialog window with each toon and from your main it'll push down your choices to the others, very handy. It'll also automatically accept quest shares from people in the friends list.
