I put this in all my assist and follow macros (I have all my assist macros in with my spells now so I no longer need an assist button and find it works much better).

/follow [nodead] toon1, [nodead] toon2, [nodead] toon3, [nodead] toon4

I find this works great and does not require a keypress to switch leader. The only downside, that I've found, is that if your insignia gets taken and you autorelease to a gy and rezz, you will essentially be leaderless until your leader returns to be able to select assists. I normally then just run my "main" back and spam chain heal or lhw while I run my main back.
Use a macro like this:
/follow [target=focus,help,nodead] [target=toon1,nodead][target=toon2,nodead][target=toon3,nodead][target=toon4,nodead][target=toon1,dead]

This will make you able to switch leader with focus if you got one, switch leader in a set order if you dont use a focus, and let you follow toon1 if all are dead (corpserunning)
