Default ASUS Geforce 8800 GT - $159 (sale!)

So I am still not sure of my full PC build, but I am thinking about buying 2x of these graphics cards. I've read around and heard these are pretty much the best cards for the price, and higher-end more expensive cards see relatively small increase in performance.

I will be single boxing 5 instances.

Do you think I should buy 2 now to take advantage of the sale price before I have the rest of my system specs figured out?

I was planning to buy these anyways i think.

I 5 box on a single PC with a 8800 GTS 512, and paid double what your paying for just one 8800GT, so yeah for me that would have been a better deal. Keep in mind, the only problems I have is with entering a capital city like Org... have to take it a little easy untill it loads for all five accounts. Other than that, everything else is cake. I cant imagine the same problem with 2 8800GT's.

    Just bought 2!!!!!

Unfortunately my apartment is in NJ so I had to pay $22 sales tax!!! Son of a!

But after rebate it will have costed me a total of $280, not bad for two very nice graphics cards.

A while ago there were a couple of threads on this forum about performance drops when using two 8800's in combination with vista. You might want to take a look at those threads.

Thanks for the info, I will check it out.

This may help me decide between vista or xp 64bit.

I'm running vista 64 bit and I have a newer 8800GT 512 (G92) and my old 8800GTS 320 with 4 monitors, one being 1920x1080, and I have virtually no problems in major cities. Occasionally an addon messes up and i get ~25 fps, but most of the time the minimum I get is 30-40FPS on my main, with all the eye candy turned up. When I used to single box, without addons i'd get around 120+FPS and honestly, 40 and 120 look about the same.

The First one linked also has a $30 rebate, making it quite a good deal.

I currently have an old 8800gts 320mb and a newer 8800gt g92 512. My second PCIe x16 slot is only x4 electrical, but would I see an improvement if I put a newer 8800gts in the main slot, and moved the 8800gt 512 into the secondary slot? I get decent performance as it is, but I had to "borrow" the 320mb card from my other computer, so I either need to get a new card for that one, or rearrange my main gaming comp. The price is hard to pass up tho.

I've heard nothing but bad things about running 2 video cards in SLI configuration with Wow. Most people experience performance losses, and I've actually yet to read a post where somebody had a performance gain with 2 video cards in SLI. Wow does not officially support SLI configurations.

On the flip side, perhaps if you ran the cards independently, out of SLI mode, and split your instances of Wow across the two you'd see a performance gain. I'd be interested in hearing the result on that.

AMD's next-gen HD4850 will be out in a few days, and it's rumored to cost around $199 and could be quite a bit faster than an 8800GT. Might be a good idea to wait and see.
