Just curious.. im up at almost 55 with my 5 shams now.. and i notice that their melee really doesn't do dick anymore (elemental spec) should i go shields/1hander on all of them now? just to help stop damage....

I stopped using 2-handers around 20 or 30 I think. The further down Elemental you go, the more you are a Mail-wearing Shield-toting Caster, and much less a run-in-hit-you Meleer'.
...for when one toon just isn't enough...

elemental is probablyt the way to go
you are at a very rough time on your shaman, deciding whether or not to switch to elemental. If you do switch you don't have any profeciency with the new weapons. if you haven't been using shields you need to level those skills up and it takes time. You probably have +strength or +agility armor instead of +intelect or +spell. again, the switch can be brutal. You will find that at 57 you can start buying some outland gear in the AH "of the sorcer" etc. The top elemental totem stacks so with 5x +3 spell hit, +3 spell crit you will have good chance to have at least one of your team to crit at all times. and you get clearcasting after each crit to save mana. etc. I pretty much carry a shield although I don't use any of the enhancement tree.
