I just went with whatever I didn't already have on my main characters. My 70 rogue is a miner/herbalist because I don't use him for much else, and thus it was a waste to give him a profession (he wouldn't run instances often enough to get the BoP drops, for example). My 70 shaman is enchanting/smithing.

So I decided I'd cover the professions I didn't already have, with one exception. My mage has alchemy (man, that was easy to max). My priest has tailoring. My paladin has skinning/leatherworking. My warlock has jewelcrafting. I did not get engineering yet, because all of the money and time I put into mining was to provide for the warlock's JC. The leatherworking was almost incidental-- I did not sell any of the stuff I had skinned, so when I decided to level it up, I think I spent 30 gold total... and that was without AHing a single item, I just vendored it all as I leveled it up to save time.

At some point I think it'll be good to get engineering on one of them, if only for the sake of having a repair bot available. But for now I've got almost all of the other stuff covered, and as I run instances I should be able to get a lot of the BoP recipes for them.

    I have x 4 shaman

    Primary: Mining/ Skinning
    2nd: Enchanting/ Jewel crafting
    3rd: Leather working/ Engineering
    4th: Tailoring/ Blacksmithing

You really have to do tailoring and enchanting if you multi box - there is so much Sh*t that drops to disenchant and so much cloth that drops to make into stuff that can be disenchanted its crazy not to have those two.

My main is the only person i want to pick up stuff so its a waste imo to not give him two profs that involve picking things up.

I just did the other professions for fun - i didnt really need them.

BTW - if you have that many professions be prepared to send hrs just messing with all that stuff. It sometimes is very annoying but most of the time its fun.

WoW makes leveling professions pretty painless, especially from 1-300. Certainly compared to games like EQ... *shudder*

I did get a bit lucky, in that I had leveled up herbalism on an alt character before I did it with my rogue, and I had a bank full of herbs that made it very easy to level alchemy up quickly. It's similar to what happened with LW on the paladin... I figured that with so much leather in the bank, it wouldn't be so bad to grind it out, and that was the case. Tailoring and skinning were easy in that I could level them as I went along. Only jewelcrafting held me up, since I had few ores saved up and almost no gems. I did spend about... 300 gold getting that one done, but even that is a pretty small amount to spend IMO. I plan to level LW and JC further as I go along, they are both at 300 right now. Alchemy was easy enough to get from 300-375, because I could just take the mats from the guild bank and return the stuff I had created.

I try to grind as little as I can in games like this most of the time. I may have to grind out the mats for engineering at some point, or spend the gold to do it, but all in good time. So far, leveling their tradeskills hasn't been bad at all.

    For leveling:

    Shammy 1: Skinning/Herb
    Shammy 2: Mining
    Shammy 3: Enchanting
    Shammy 4: LW
    Shammy 5: LW

Mentioned higher in this thread, Herbalism is almost a must have. Even if you don't skill it up. It is a godsend for some collection quests (just remember to loot LAST on your herbalist!) Inside Underbog, it's invaluable for collecting Sanguine Hibiscus.

Collection professions are a mixed blessing while leveling. It really slows things down (I hear the skinning sound in my sleep). But at the same time, I'd hate to go back to low level zones just to skill them up. Furthermore, I'm obsessive. When that yellow dot appears on my minimap, if it's a skill point, I must grab it. In general, I believe having the big three pays off huge in the Outlands instances. So many have ore and herbs. It's easy money with no competetion.

Enchanting is a must have and EASY to skill up if you start when you are a wee toon. All those greens and blues you are never going to use, DE them, and grind out some lowbee enchants. Vendoring blue BOP's and then having to pay for enchanting mats is a lose lose. And you get ALOT of the better enchants from Outland instances.

Eventually, all or most will pick up alchemy as a prof. It's easy to level (I have 3 master xmuters atm), and the low level mats are dirt cheap on my server. Xmuting is great money. It's good to plan for on the way up because you will want to get your sporregar rep while questing in Zangermarsh.

I don't know how feasable it will be to level LW on all of them, of if the BOP gear is worth it. For now, it works on two just to burn thru the main toons skinning mats. With the potential to really grind out alot of badges and gear in heroics, I hesitate to go for professions soley based on the acquisition of craftable BOP gear.

I have two other alts that are JC, so no need for a third and 5 alts that are tailors (3x spellcloth, 1x mooncloth, and 1x shadoweave). Tailoring is good as a money maker (spellcloth is going for upwards of 65g on my server), but serves little utility to shamans. I have one alt that is a BS/Eng. Engineering *could* be fun on the shammies, but I'm not enough of a massochist to level it a second time.

    Shammy 1: Enchant/Tailor - 270/250
    Shammy 2: Skinner/LW - 300/200
    Shammy 3: Herb/Alch - 0/0
    Shammy 4: Tailor/Alch - 0/0
    Paladin: Mining/JC - 0/0

Went back and raised up skinning last night... took 4 hours from 0-300. Deffinately something I wish I had the entire ride though.
Gonna go back and start Herb tonight. Followed by Power Leveling Alch as high as the AH will allow, hopefully 200.

The Paladin got left behind at lvl 38 *which still makes me a sad Panda.* I'll be going back to pick her up when the Shammies hit 70 at the end of the month.

What about maxing out dps and such, on a server where I already have 3 70's and can farm dailies for gold? I want my 5x Shammies to be the best they can be so right now I have 5x Enchanting (for later ring enchants) and 5x LW.

I've got each of their enchanting skills up to 225+ now but haven't started on the LW yet but trained initial skill so they can get Outlands BoP patterns as someone else suggested doing.

I was going to go Engineering/Enchanting on all 5 but the only attraction in Engineering would have been for the headpiece and to me it didn't look that great for Shaman compared to the Engineering headpiece for a prot pally.

So went with LW. I'm thinking 5x drums will be great in BG's and the Drums of War and Drums of Battle would be great in instances not to mention the epic LW trainer patterns looked decent as well as at least 1 LW pattern that was being sold in trade channel on our server for boots.

Any thoughts on this where choosing professions is not based on making money with them but for maxing out your toons? My 5x locks will definitely be tailors and I'll trade cloths for mooncloths after they have their epic sets.

By this same logic, you could consider JC. There are several BOP gems that can be crafted, although I am not sure how they stack up against the new Sunwell gems.
