New PC Build, What do you think?

I don’t build systems often, about one every 4 years. Here is the list of components I was planning on using. I haven’t had time to check the compatibility with the power supply yet.

Is there anything you see here that stands out as a bad choice, or anything you could suggest ? All parts will be ordered from newegg.

All looks lovely.
Your only going to use 2gb of RAM though i presume? using 3gb would be a bad decision.

Also maybe use 250gb HDDs in RAID 0? Would turn out faster. :wink:

For research what I’ve done is looked up the CPU and Mother board to see if any systems out there exist out there now with that motherboard combo setup. They do. Only possible problem noted was if the BIOS has an old version on it (old stock) which would require a quick flash to update it.

As for Raid 0. I had that before, with the old system. I'll need to research how much of a performance increase I could expect running that. You suggested it, so it must have a worth wild advantage I’ll take a look =)

The down side to that I had with raid 0 so far. When the old PC went bad. I had no way to take the data off because it was a Raid 0 config. I figured, least this way if I didn’t backup that day I could get the data off. Also I’m a bit worried because double the hardware, double the chance of something going down. I have really really bad luck, lol I laugh but it’s the honest truth.

I didnt go SLI this time for that reason and just selected a nice single card.

As for running 3g, that’s what I did with the old system. The reason I only did 3g was at the time there was a problem between Microsoft and my motherboard not recognizing over 3g, the company suggested I only order 1 extra gig instead to bring it up to 3g. I did, and while the computer worked, it seemed to be ok.

Perhaps there are some problems only running 3g that I’m not aware of; could you go a little more in-depth? 2 (512) so I do get the duel channel functionality out of it.

DDR2 800 I figure I have the 1g of it allready, I think DDR3 costs an arm and leg. Further research required. But if you don't like the 3g idea anyway it might be in my best interest just to saw off a limb or two and hand it over :lol:

The power supply, you'd think is one of the easy ones out of the entire list. But I'm having trouble with this one.

On the motherboard It shows it requires a 24pin connector, along with another one that is the CPU power connector "8pins" But some are blocked off making it 4pins. which is like my old system. For the life of me I don't see a power supply out there setup this way.

Hmm, it looks as if the power supply shown has a 20+4 pin connector, which will work fine with that board. Most power supplies will have a 20+4, so you should be okay.

As far as raid 0, I'd personally get a single WD 10k raptor instead (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136012), but that is just personal preference.

If you decide to just go with a single sata drive besides the raptor, I'd go with Seagate instead. WD's high capacity drives have been known to fail a bit more

And as far as the ram, I would agree and only use the 2 gigs of matching sticks over the 3 gigs.

All of it looks good. I just suggest a power supply like something from CPU power and cooling.

Plan was to go DDR2 800, looked in to DDR3. GOOD GOD that's costs a lot

After what I just saw i'm going with DDR2. Man.

In an effort to future proof your system I would opt for the Q6600 cpu, sure the clock speed per core is less but all the new games coming out will be taking advantage of all your cores and 4 cores at a lesser clock speed will smash a 2 core proc.
