It's definitely necessary to have gold: enchants, repairs, mount money, consumables etc. High level weapon enchants on my server are running about 500g now also. When you raise the question "what is it all for", and render it all as a vicious cycle of sorts it can technically make sense, and seem a bit futile... but for me I would have to say that my reason for playing is the sheer challenge I get from doing things that most other players can't or won't do. Whether it's success in arena, multi-boxing a difficult PvE encounter, customizing my playstyle/UI and things like that. From playing since release I've found that most people seem to weigh success in wow by the equips and items that they obtain, and all this does is lead to obsessive and counter-constructive tendencies as shown by the plethora of "dramas" that plague many raiding guilds, such as this one http://www.vqguild.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=553 as a recent example. Then excluding the minority of people who keep clear objectives about what they want to do with the rewards they obtain, what you have is a bunch of people raiding together all for the purpose of obtaining glittery loot simply "because it's an upgrade", or "it looks better than x". These people are like the proverbial kid in a candy store, surrounded by things he simply HAS to have. When this attitude is prominent in the guild, a lot of people will usually quit because in spite of their intentions, their guild is no longer playing like a team, they are playing as ego-centric individuals bound to 24 other people to get what they want.

Not to rant about raids, but basically my goals in game I have designed to revolve around my personal proficiency as a player, and not just on all the meaningless "perks" I can invest in. Playing this way has given me a kind of aesthetic appreciation for the game, especially when it comes to arena and multi-boxing.

EDIT: To farm gold if you're 5-boxing, do heroics if you can manage it. A lot of encounters take a lot of skill to 5 box because of the way you have to move etc. but when you master them and stop dying, you get huge gold return plus epix drops-

I like Con7ents view on things.

For me, the whole point to multiboxing is to do things I've never done before. For example, I have NEVER done a Heroic dungeon - still, after all this time, thanks to a long post-BC break and being in a small guild prior to multiboxing.

I've never had a single character sitting around in equipment that I can honestly call (by my own definitions to be sure) largely complete. Never done quite a few things actually - and that's why I mulltibox - and to get back to the topic, I need only so much gold as is necessary to fund that.

Sounds like the best way to do that is Heroics once I can master them, until then I'll keep grinding up and maybe do some of the dailies that give rep as well as gold.

Con7ent makes a lot of sense. (And I respect anyone who uses a warrior tank in heroics multiboxing - I've tried on my eppiced out warrior and find the "fun" part elusive).

Just ran a few more heroics today - looked at my main and he had 21 Primal Nethers. Wondered if I could do something useful with them and found them selling on the AH for 60g. Never thought of that - just a little bonus gold per instance. Guess I need to look at how much money I end up with from Heroics. I never thought about them as anything but Badge/Epic Loot options.

Maybe I can skip those SSO dailies alltogether and still pile up the dough. Then again, a few of them are so stupid easy...

It would probably be easier for me if I had a pally to AE tank the mobs but from playing warr forever tanking is just like second nature to me now :P
I have to watch my CCs a lot though, especially since 3 of the toons I'm boxing right now are pretty new 70's and just have some pvp gear as epics.

I envy you though, AE tanking ftw

Personally, I'm not a quester, at all. And definatly not a grinder. So I usually -suck- when it comes to making gold.

However, strangely, I can get myself to farm Stratholme Baron runs. I don't know, maybe it's the nostalgia, or maybe the uber small chance on the mount. But I can get myself to do it again and again. And I've been doing this many times now, and still don't mind going there. I have three epic flyers now, in a few days I'll have the last 2k gold required for the last one I need.

How? Disenchanting all loot and selling the shards.

Note: Sometimes shards don't seem to sell at all. I've had days I had like 150 lbs's stocked up on the AH (2000 gold worth on my server of lbs's alone. :P ). You can undersell them to get rid of them quicker, but don't undersell to much. It's a very up and down market, somedays no one looks for them, somedays tons do. Be sure to get the max out of your shards, don't be afraid to put them up again and again. They will sell! And putting up shards costs like nothing anyhow. xD

I very much enjoyed going back with my 70Hunter into Scholo and Strath. Fun instances to solo they are.

To quote that guy in Robocop:

"It takes money to make money".

I'm saving for WoTLK now, I want to start ahead and stay ahead in the expansion in terms of gear, rep and professions. Dont have epic flyers on my guys yet, and probably wont bother till the expansion hits (speculating that the price will drop then). Making cash from a variety of craft professions and speculating on the gem market for once S4 hits.

If you have time to spare and want general cash inisights (non boxing), see this megathread on EJ:
