Thread: How to tank?

    Default How to tank?

Got my shams to lvl 9 yesterday (i know i should be higher but the wife is slowing me down and only giving me like 3 hours a day to play... i feel like a kid again and having to beg her to let me play). Anyways, I have a lvl 26 pally tank (which i will quest with them when they get to lvl 26, but to then just instances). My question is how do i tank with a pally. I never tanked before all my toons are dps based. Going to try RFC today after work, I know that my pally can probably solo it, but it will give me some practice on how to multi box in an instance. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this?

Was planning to have my sham spells for key pressing and have the pally as a clicker for spells.

Okay.. very quick guide to Paladin tanking!
    - Keep Righteous Fury up at all times, the extra threat is certainly worth it.
    - The main tanking Aura is the Retribution Aura. It's not a massive amount of damage but does help to ensure that once a mob hits you it'll stick.
    - Keep Holy Shield up as much as possible. If you're running low on mana switch to level one as it at least keeps the damage mitigation there.
    - Your nicest threat-generator is Consecration, nice AoE spell. Unless there's a reason to save the cooldown (Such as expecting extra mobs soon) pop this as soon as it's ready.
    - Use Blessings judiciously, I personally use Judgment the most but do have a good range ready.
    - Get hit, take some damage, get healed by another member of the parth. I know this sounds odd but with Retribution and Holy Shield you actually get more threat on you for being hit, and since you regain part of healing done by others as mana you shouldn't be afraid of taking a fair few knocks. I've actually heard of Paladins sitting down mid-combat in order to get crit'ted.. just means they need healing and so get some mana.

Don`t think you`ll have holy shield at his level. Still once you get it use it :-)

Putting it together: A typical pull
    1. Prep Seal of Righteousness
    2. Avenger's Shield, break line of sight/ have other players counter if the pull involves casters.
2a. If CC is necessary (and it usually won't be), apply it after the AS pull.
    3. Judgement of Righteousness on the first kill target.
    4. Consecrate, Holy Shield, up a Seal, in this order (to insure timers are appropriately staggered).
4a. If more threat is needed, Seal of Righteousness
4b. For more threat on a longer fight, Seal of the Crusader (Judged immediately, then up another seal).
4c. If more mitigation is needed, Seal of Light (Judged immediately, then up another seal).
4d. If the mobs are runners, Seal of Justice (judged, up another).
4e. If it's going to be a long fight, Seal of Wisdom (Judged, up another).
    5. Keep Consecrate and Holy Shield up, rotating seals and Judgements as necessary. Try to maintain active judgements on as many targets as possible, rotating weapon swings between judged targets to maintain them.
    6. Throughout the fight try to move your targets a little bit as they die. It can be difficult to loot 12 corpses stacked directly on top of each other.

Thanks for the great posts. I will have to change a little things around because I don't have some of the skills yet.

No idea if this teaches you anything about Tankadins and it's out of date too but it's one entertaining movie
