Default Eliijah's Multibox thread; Beginner onwards

    Eliijah's Thread

    Hi,
For about one month I have been planning to multibox after being sheepishly drawn in by the videos' of Veronika; a 5 man shaman multibox team. A cliche maybe. I'm completely new at this and my knowledge of macros, addons, and what not is fairly limited, so I hope I can update this thread with colloquial layman's style so all players can set up their own multiboxing up as easily as possible without any kind of 'technical' or advanced computer knowledge being a prerequisit. I realize guides have already been done, but I just thought I'd add my 2 pence as I go along :-)

    Why I have chosen multiboxing?

I loathe doing groups with other player's outside 10 and 25 guild runs, I don't have time nor the patience for eventualities that often occur with random players and to be honest I shouldn't have to put up with it. I spend my hard earned free time playing this game and want to yeild the most amount of enjoyment out of it as I can, and multiboxing although not in short term; while leveling, should serve to be a damage limitation to time management spent in game and in relation to my 'Real-life'. The main goal of my multiboxing is for the soul benefit of my main character within the group. I plan to be completely independent in terms of setting up a 2vs2, 3vs3, 5vs5 arena teams, and also be free from the tribulations and pitfalls of setting up 5 man groups for PVE. I understand that multiboxing 5 man groups will be very hard to begin with, especially if my long plan goal is to complete heroic instances! I also plan for it be a good source of income for potions, repairs, and any other items I'll need for PVE. Doing several daily quests at once, and also being able to loot all the gold drops from an instance should suffice monetry wise.
I do play the game for the social aspect, but I have to draw a line, and when the game becomes an unenjoyable and negative experience that's when I feel I have to revaluate my options.

I have leveled 2 level 70's, and my main has always been a warrior. But with the constant disbanding guilds and MT allocation of loot before any other tank, I've been extremely unlucky in terms of saving up my DKP an receiving no loot and therefore my guild prospects are dire. I have never played a Shaman before but I look forward to playing a healing class!

I'm picking Dranei shamans, because I'm used to alliance. So far I have levelled two shamans to lvl 20, I plan to do this for all 5, as I think it's pretty pointless trying to multibox from the very beginning. Hopefully I can try to avoid quests and level through instances as much as possible, getting in as much practice as possible.

    Beginnings
    and Progress

Until I get my internet installed and I get my new system, this post will be fairly sparce, but once I get everything in order I'll try and update it 2-3 times a week. Until then I plan to level all my Shaman characters to lvl 24. I hope this will be a good base for multiboxing, if anyone has any suggestions on what level I should start on or what a good route for leveling shaman are, please feel free to comment and I'll amend the thread as necessary.2008/05/08
I have decided since against leveling all my shaman to level 24 independently unless I begin to becomes demotivated running the same areas over and over again, and also missing out with a bit of practice with macroing, keyclone, and various addons. 2008/05/13

    Programs
    :

Firsly I looked up some information regarding the type of programs used for multiboxing:

[Other] Comprehensive List of Software Tools (updated 9/07)

The next thing I read was this great guide:

    Beginners Guide 2 Dual-Boxing (3,4,5 boxing)

I then decided Keyclone would be the best option, Kyclone costs $19, a one off payment I have yet to test it:

    http://solidice.com/keyclone

[Keyclone] setting up a command to work with maximizer (step-by-step)

I found this quite useful also,

How to Box 5 accounts (or 2 or 3 or 4) with ONE computer

Macros, Addons, and Keyclone learning curve

    In progress.

Apart from this, I have just been reading the forums avidly, and until I get my computer delivered and have some experience with multiboxing, I'll just be posting my current status on leveling my characters to 24. With hinsight I would of probably started to multibox all characters from level 15 onwards, however my computer will not arrive for another 3-4 weeks, so all I can do is level each character. 2008/05/13

welcome to the forums! and boxing, you are gonna have fun, most of us started boxing for the same reasons. ie can't stand pugs or wanted something more out of the game that soloing could not offer.

Let them hate, as long as they fear.

One of the most refreshing things I've done during my WoW tenure is to switch faction. There are many new quests, which makes that grind a little more bearable. If you have no other ties to the alliance, I would try the horde out. It's good to switch things up here and there, imo.

    Plus, Horde > Alliance!

    1 computer:
I have currently ordered a Latop ( Not ideal, altough I travel) for multiboxing five characters at once, I have checked with other multiboxers whether the system should suffice, and the general concensus it that it will. It's the Dell 1780 XPS ( 4g ram, 2.4 ghz duo, 1g GFX card) I'll post some more detailed information in time.
I have no specific information on this particular laptop, but I will tell you than I have had less than stellar results trying to push them the same as a similarly gear desktop. You may want to search around here a little and see if anybody else has tried this, maybe they could give you more specific input.

    Good luck, keep us posted.
No matter where you go, there you are.

    Welcome to the Forums.

For me, I started multiboxing for the same reason - random, and almost invariably terrible pugs.

I'd also suggest you follow Bob's advice and switch faction. It'll give you a much fresher levelling experience particularly if you've never played Horde before.
...for when one toon just isn't enough...

I'd throw in my vote for switching sides as well for a nice fresh twist on things. I was a PvE raider (2box mage/priest) for years horde side... took 18 months off and rolled my new multibox team over on alliance and the combo of new questlines, cities that I didn't really know my way around in etc etc was enough to really bump up the engagement factor for me.

of course I only made it to 50 or so and realized that I preferred the horde races aesthetically... but by then I was good and hooked on the 5 boxing thing so re-rolling (again) wasn't a bid deal

It seems like a great idea, however I've played up to 70 on horde and prefer alliance, I'm not sure why, but I feel more at home being an alli! :-)
    Thanks for your responses,
