The 8800 is a huge upgrade over an 8600. Depending which model you get you'll see significant gains again.
After seeing my 5 year old Athlon XP 2400 perform nearly as well as my quad core system I'm convinced it's all about the video card for raw FPS numbers... the old athlon is running a Radeon 9700 pro which was bleeding edge for it's time...

If you get an 8800 get the GTS 512mb RAM, which is using the newer G92 core. Don't get the 8800 GTS with 320 or 640mb RAM which uses the older core.
