What are some ideas for what to do with sound from Multiboxes?

In a Multibox set up do most players only use sound on their main machine? I've been playing around with looping the sound out from one in to the input to the next and chaining them into the main computer. But this seems less than ideal due to the strange mix of computer sound cards I have (they are not all the same). I get odd hums and feedback along the way.

In the game I am multiboxing I've grown custom to the audio combat clues for reactions/chains and specials unique to a class. And without those audio clues I am much slower in taking advantage of them.

I also use Ventrilo and listen to music in the background - which sems to be a difficult bit of tweaking to get the sound levels balanced with 5 computers looped into one another. Without Ventrilo I'd be lost, no way I can type/chat with other groups/guild members and multi-box. Heh, I might need another couple arms. (Makes me wish I could have been conjoined twins, *sigh*)

And on a side note, I think somehow I have fried one onboard sound input this way. Maybe got something plugged in wrong along the chain during a recent renovation and zapped it somehow with too much input. (theory: too much amplification of line level input).

What do you do with sound?

I turned of music and sound 4 years ago while playing daoc.
I never bothered to turn it on again. I don't feel like missing anything.

Only my main has sound, but I have in combat only custom oom/heal samples for each slave and their pet that play on my main. Similar to what SCT can do for yourself, but for the other party members and their pets.

I have to ask.... why? 99% of the time its the same sound but with different start times as sound is triggered client side.

Music off, sound on all machines.

    Main reasons being:

    1. The sound can give and additional indicator of your alts being attacked/sapped/poly'd/etc that you may not see straight away on your main monitor.

    2. You instantly know if your alt gets a whisper (like from a GM maybe )

    3. The fact that the sounds are slightly out of sync makes it sound like a small crowd of different people when clapping, cheering, etc

    4. Nothing sounds more like impending doom than multiple shadow/frost/lighting bolts charging up...

    Cheers,

On a similar note anyone have any experience of audio over ethernet AoE . I need to have my current machine (old) connected audioally to my real main (new PC) while my newer PC's graphics card is fixed/replaced. And while I can do that with a mini jack male-female cable (I have one) I normally use that to make the mic jack useful...

If I could send the audio from my older PC through ethernet I'd be able to use the mic cable for what its supposed to be used for. And have my music on my speakers.

And yes I do use WoW sound, though not the music, mainly as like others they give an extra clue as to what is going on with my alt.

I have 5 boxes running on one pc and if i turn sound on on even one of the boxes my fps plummets horribly. We are talking from what's totally seemless fps down to 3fps.

Not entirely sure why this is, quite possibly something to do with vista and a lack of hardware support for sound. Having said that, Im one of those silent gamers. Nothing drives me nuts more than repetative sounds.
