Default Really impresssed with Boomkin DPS

Well I posted a while back about considering replacing my pally with a boomkin, levelling her from 48 to meet up with my 4xshammies at 70. So far I'm really impressed with her dps, and eagerly anticipating her hitting 70 and getting geared up. In a Ramparts run tonight at 63 she was at 355 DPS compared with 462 on my resto shammy. If I recall correctly, my shammies were at about 450 in elemental spec on 1st dinging 70. Plus the fact that with her in the grp I'm lookin at around 36% crit on my best shammies, /drool.... Can't wait to see her in heroics and adapt my team to full DPS instead of tank, healer and 3x....

    I'll keep you informed

    Cheers

I'm running a boomkin and 4 shaman, and I'm finding that the boomkin's DPS is actually quite lackluster. My shaman have done well over 500 DPS in the last couple instances I've done. The druid is usually about 150 DPS less with roughly equal gear. I'm generally using wrath spam on the druid and CL/LB/LB rotation on the shaman. I guess some of the DPS difference is due to CL hitting secondary targets often in instance pulls, but still, DPS is DPS.

Im not sure what the deal is but my friend ran some meters from my 2 shammies and they are level 67 and doing around 1k dps each. Is this reading wrong? Just wondering because both of yours was way lower.

Hmm not sure, I use recount... depends on the meter i guess...

I use Starfire spam on LB and Wrath only on Chain Lightning, maybe that's what's making the diff...

The druid is 64 now, and already has an impressive 462 Spell dmg, so that's probably helping quite a lot lucky with drops so far.

Not only that, but Balance was never a truly worked-on spec (at least from a design standpoint). I say so because I leveled from 60 to 70 as a Boomkin my first time around. I'm running a few more boomkin on my other 4 accounts now only because I have the most fun with them. Also, the Boomkin spec generally has a few more utility-based items rather than damage. Also, have you checked into how the fire totem damage affects ELE shaman DPS? IT would be interesting to know.

One thing is for sure - Blizz never quite got hybrids right - EVER. That, and I'm wondering if Boomkin wasn't intended to be more of a raid spec than a five-man spec since Boomkin has a built-in mana return (chance on melee hit, but still). I don't recall ELE shaman getting the same thing. Water shield, yes. But if they are getting hit much, something is wrong anyhow (assuming you're not 5-boxing, that is).

Bottom line - it's hard to tell what's going on, especially since gear for Boomkin is really hard to come by. Saying they have equal gear is hard to gauge, at least to me, anyway. Of course, I've not compared the specs on Bal druids and Ele shaman enough to determine who ought to have what stats.

Another thought as I'm typing this - I've been told by people before I started MBing that, even in green gear, my starfires were just DEADLY and my wrath spam was meh. I can't for the life of me tell why, but there ya go.

Wrath spam = mana inefficient, low dps. IS/Starfirex3 or x4 is your desired cast order; Wrath is ONLY for when you either have high-speed-hit aggro(some casters are slow enough to starfire against) and can't starfire, or need to burn something down fast. :P Starfire does better overall dps + saves mana, especially if you have it's Idol. Also, Boomkins aren't known for sustained dps, more for Burst dps; I ALWAYS had lower dps than all other caster dps in raids but I did just as much or more dmg total than they did :p Until you pass 900-1k spelldmg, crit is your Best Friend.

Should have around 700spelldmg at 70 depending on how you gear up(DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CLOTH :p especially if using Leather means you'd be giving up int/sta)

Took me about 15 minutes to work up a list of planned gear that'll get me to around 750-800 all leather Spelldmg within 2 days or so of hitting 70. Not that hard to find imo, can post if you are interested.

Also, mana shield is just about the best mana regen tool in the game, even without getting hit.... Better than Blessing of wisdom by a long shot... I rarely need to drink on the shammies, even in instances (or once every 4 or 5 pulls or so).

I guess going around with 3x totems of wrath with her in instances is also helping a lot.

My Boomkin regularly does about 1k DPS. He's been known to out-threat my prot pally if I'm not tring hard to tank. Without doing any severe number crunching, I'd say the big part is crit rate, crit rate, crit rate. Shaving 1/3 of his cast time off every time he crits does wonders for damage. The scary thing is, he's not that bad a tank. Yeah, he has no avoidance, but 12k HP unbuffed, 15k armor, and he can survive better than most anything else putting out that much DPS.

I generally run him with a prot pally, holy/disc priest, elemental shaman, and fire mage, so despite the armory listing his crit rate at 13, that's naked. He usually runs around 26 true crit, and this is with him gemmed and enchanted for Stamina, because I'm a HP whore. I haven't sat down to figure the mechanics myself, but I know I've had him tank rift guardians in Black Morass (with other people, not boxing) before the pally tank put Salv on him. When I ran Omen Threat Meter in my boxing group, he usually sits at about 90% threat when being serious.

Edit: I need to check when I get a chance, but I'm wondering if Nature's Grace is still limited by the Global Cooldown. I seem to recall my druid having a reduced GCD after a wrath crit, which would make sense to me after the spell haste patch that reduced GCD to a minimum of 1 second if you have enough spell haste. WoWwiki says the GCD limits the DPS of wrath, but I'm not sure that's still the case. I'll check it out tomorow. For now, bed.
