Or is the ticket that the paladin did the majority of damage but left the instance, so the lowbie's exp gain is only modulated by the 30% damage the mage did to finish up the job?
I really dont think that, the xp decreased by dmg on the mob, applys to instances. That's why the mage is out of the party, otherwise he could just be on it, but doing only those 30%? I think so.
It still requires a lot of time, practice, and above all, u need a very well geared paladin along with a good mage and sometimes a healer.

Later in the thread he hints at a developer-fix incoming for this. Judging from the attention this method has gotten lately I bet 2.4.2 will have that fix.

If you keep doing it you can claim ignorance, plus the fact that the game allows you to do so. But I'd think twice before continuing.

This is basically what I've been doing to PL all my toons...

    -70 Pally boost 4x toons 8lvls
-4x toon (8 lvls higer) boost 1xtoon (8 lvls lower) up to equal level. The Lowbie toon is used as the main and tags the mobs ungrouped while the 4xtoons stomp the mobs ass. Lowbie regroups (basically the Slavepens method at a lower lvl)
-Once the last lowbie is = lvl again go back to the 70 pally and do it all over again.

An example of wtf I'm talking about...

-Team of 5x hits lvl 15 through quests
-70 Boosts 4x lvl 15 thru DM to lvl 20
-4xlvl 20's boost last lvl 15 to 20 in DM using upgroup/tag method
    -70 Boosts 4x lvl 20 thru Stock to 26
    -4x lvl 25's boost last lvl 20 to 26
    -70 Boosts 4x lvl 26 thru SM to 34
    -4x lvl 34 boost lvl 26 to lvl 34 in SM gy/lib
    -etc...

Note: For the ungroup/tag/kill/regroup method to work the mobs must be no higher than orange to your lowbie and no lower than green to your highbie.

You can also just use your 4x highbies to help your lowbie to quest however it is simplier to just do the same instance as they are being PL'ed thru in my mind so you're not running all over the world. Also you can kill (assuming you can find some post 2.3) outdoor world elites using the ungroup/tag killing method but they for some reason give less xp per kill than elites in instances of an equal level.

Also, YES THIS IS BORING AS HELL!!! But it is rather quick imo.

Tried this last night with a 66.3 warrior with full rested Xp. took me 2-3 hours to get to 68.0 and that included a lot of macro modifiactions, a couple of wipes and several times having to go resummon so probably about 30 mins for a rested XP lvl 1 hour for a normal.

    The idea:
Lowbie disbands from group, tags mobs, 70's kill, reinvite lowbie to group before he gets ported. lowbie get 100% XP

    Team Setup:
    66 warrior (booster/ main window / focus)
    70 pali (group leader/healer)
    3 x 70 ele shaman

    Keybinds / kill seqeunce:
Key1 Warrior: /castsequence charge thunder clap, cleave, thunder clap, cleave etc etc etc - tags each mob.
    Key1 GroupLeader/healer: /kick <Lowbie Name> /invite <lowbie Name> /target <lowbie Name>
This starts the lowbie tagging and disbands him before he tags the 1st mob, also targets him with healer to make healing easier.

Key2 warrior: same as above no charge though
    Key2 DPs: /cast [target=focus] <your DPS spells here>
starts killing mobs the lowbie has tagged.

    Key3 healer: spam heal lowbie
does a few things, heals lowbie so stop death but more interestingly gets all agro without causing damage so gets mobs on you and doesnt tag any the lowbie has missed with the st few AOe tags. Im using a prot pali to heal so having the mobs on him is a great bonus.

So basicaly press key1, you instantly disband lowbie and start pulling, spam key 2&3 lowbie is gettingspam healed, agro is going to healer, and mobs hes tagged are getting DPSed. I manualy clicked the reinvite button on the lowbie, MAKE SURE YOU GET BACK IN GROUP BEFORE 10 SECS LEFT i found even 1 sec after this and your lowbie will be ported, most pulls this isnt an issue but getting fear bombed(and you will be) can really screw this up, better to have lowbie in group and get group XP for the last few mobs than have to resummon.

I found the best route was to kill to 2nd boss, swim over the pond bit and reset, the start mobs(lots of crab packs) are the best and easiest source of XP, after the 2nd boss your looking at some packs with mind control and aoe fear, plus you have a hell of a walk back anyway so just not worth the hassle for worse XP.

Will be trying it out again today with:
    68 lock
    4 ele shaman

    Hope this helps
