Thread: YMouse/YKeys

    Default YMouse/YKeys

My 8 port multiplexer and 8 port KM switch should be here today. I have seen reference that you do not need a Y-Mouse, but I cannot figure out any way to connect the KM and multiplexer without a Y-Mouse for each computer.

I found this image that supposedly explains it, but I'm just not getting it. If someone could explain to me, how I can do my setup so I can switch between any single comp, or all of the comps at once, without a YMouse, I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes with an 8 port, and you're only 5-boxing, that means from port 6 going to your main, you need either a Y-mouse to hook in tht PS2 port, or you could possibly get a USB>PS2 adapter, but you're still going to have to buy something to hook 2 PS2 units up to one machine.

May I ask where you found your hardware?
I'm probably switching to a pure hardware setup in the near future (with some optional software support) and I can't find a good KM or multicaster.

Well the only place to get the multiplexers really is Vetra.com They also have the 8 port KVM's which are fairly quick switching from what I hear. I just don't see a point in an 8 port KVM when you can use a program like Octopus and just move the mouse to the screen that you want to type. That way I have a 2 port KVM that cost me $40. It either switches to one screen or all screens. If it's in the one screen mode, I just move the mouse to the screen I want to type to and start typing. I guess if you don't like mouse sharing, but I think that's one of the cooler things about these setups. I love essentially having one huge computer screen that I can move my mouse anywhere on.

I do see the use for the multicaster, as that's one of the key elements in my setup, but fail to really see a need for that many ports on a KVM.

    8 port multicaster
8 port KM switch I bought the VIP-808-KM-DE. I only bought the DE version because I have other uses for it in the future that direct entry will be helpful.

From everything I've read (here and other places) the KM switches are faster than the KVM switches, and cheaper too.

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to just stick with the multicaster and use octopus or something similar. Synergy works fine right now since I'm still ironing out why Octopus hates me, buts that a bit off-topic.

Many thanks. I'm thinking I should only bother with a 4-way multicaster right now since that's all I could ever need in addition to my main machine. Generally, I prefer to keep the two separate.

I found 2 places with the Y Key lower than xkeys.com

    http://www.southernhillscomputer.com/ydukead.html for 49.99
    and
    http://www.usbcable.com/cat39.htm for 43.95

I was wondering if any of you have used either of these places before. I don't like trying new online stores.

I decided to go with southern hills computer. They are a yahoo merchant and have a good rating and they also have a good paypal rating. Also, ubcables website doesn't work real well.

I ordered 5 y keys, shipping was ~$11.00 for all 5. I'll post here next week to let everyone know if I actually get them or not.

I received tracking info a few hours after making the order, the ykeys showed up today. Pretty quick, I ordered Friday, received on Tuesday.
