hotkeynet was easier/much simpler than isboxer but lacking good mouse broadcasting and hotswap (and to a lesser extent virtualization)

This is true if you understand basic programming. As a software developer, I find HKN being very simple. However when I was studying, there were a lot of people who cannot understand even primitive scripts and hates them (despite they were good at mathematics, surprisingly). But if you like such things, ahk/hkn is certainly the choice.
