    Default WOW retail memory upgrade

    6700k OCd to 4.7
    16bg(forget specs)
    2080ti
    4k resolution max settings

Currently only running 2 accounts. When I monitor my hardware, GPU is less than 10%, CPU is 50%, but memory usage is 14.5gb of the 16gb. So I'd like to upgrade my memory.

How big should I go? I might go to 5 accounts, but not likely more than that.

Speed VS Latency. Does wow like speed or latency considerably more than the other? There is quite a price jump to lowering timings and higher speeds.

I don't think WoW particularly cares about speed vs latency, but AMD Ryzen chips do - they need speed (without sacrificing much latency). But with your 6700k, I don't think RAM specs matter all that much, so long as you get at 3000MHz.

I think 32GB was the recommended size for BFA, but I'd be curious if anyone testing shadowlands has noticed any signifigant changes in hardware stress there.

Well, I'd never recommend mixing RAM speed, timing, or even brand, but people do it. So, to help avoid that, the specs of your RAM are going to be necessary to know in order to upgrade, but I am would always recommend that you find a kit that is sold together, as a single package, that fits your needs.

Furthermore, you'd need 32GB minimum in order to comfortably 5-box WoW Retail.

Speed definitely plays a factor, and your best bet is likely going to be 3200MHz, but you can also aim for a standard CL16 timing, as well.

This, of course, assumes that your motherboard is capable of using an XMP profile (and 3200MHz RAM), and that your current overclock of 4.7GHz on the 6700K would still be stable with overclocked RAM.

Unlikely, since 32GB is overkill for 5 accounts at 2-3GB for each game client, whereas 16GB is not enough.

I was planning to buy 4 new sticks. Probably 4x16. 3200 16 shouldnt be too terrible. Thanks for the input

How are you using 14.5gb with only 2 accounts? 5 accounts use about 14-16gb.

It all depend on the amount of addon, i run 5 accounts with basic addon (meaning bare minimum, timers, buffs and so on).

Each classic client use slightly over 1GB ram, retail runs higher around 2.5GB. So if you are going to use lots and lots of addons then 32GB is minimum, you might need to go for more.

A good practice is leave 10-15% memory for OS, last thing you want is for the system to start paging.

Never seen an addon using a gig or more. The highest I've seen is Tradeskill at around 130mb and maybe TomTom runs pretty high usage. He said he's running 2 accounts, though. So even if you load up every addon you want, you wouldnt really add more than 1 gig per account. So he shouldnt be over say 10gb on triple ultra maximum settings and every addon in the book. Or am i missing something? Most addons use like 5mb. GSE runs 1.6mb, Recount is around 3.4mb, Clique is 300kb.

Also, i only run the main addons on my main leader to save memory and faster load times. I think i only share Bartender, isboxer, and EMA across all accounts and my main has the typical addons you'd see. Maybe it was a typo? 4.5gb seems more reasonable for 2 accounts.

I agree, but, in Retail, the highest I've had my five accounts up to was 5GB each, and it was likely caused by the Zygor leveling guide being loaded with progress being shared across the party.

It's probably the total RAM usage for two game clients and four hundred tabs in Chrome.

With all the potensial high costs to hardware, and how cheap 16 vs 32 gb of RAM is these days: if you find yourself having to make a hard decision in life weither you really need and / can afford 32 gb for your 5man: maybe you should reconsider and get your finances sorted first.

You can save much more money on other parts. You dont want to run out of RAM. Thats very bad.

And you dont have to go overboard on the RAM speed. If you can afford the "optimum" for your current setup, thats fine, you will gain some fps. If not, just get some cheap, slower RAM (as in 2100 or higher, if you are using dddr4). Just dont have too little of it available, or your performance will suffer.

Id have to double check, but each wow client is useing about 4.5bg of memory. I do have a lot open. 2-3 web pages, discord, twitch, bunch of random apps like nvidia and logtiech stuff. I am running on 4k every setting maxed out in game and in the nvidia settings.

The only time I really feel any type of FPS drop is when Im raiding on both toons. Other than that every aspect of the game is butter smooth. Not sure if the memory is going to help, but it does seem to peek with both characters in raid. Memory should be here by the weekend, ill post my results.
