Maybe i'm misinterpreting what you're asking, and if so im sorry, but i'm guessing if you get better at tanking you'll work it out. If you're trying to play your 3 mages as well as a solo mage, i havent seen anything close to it being done by anybody. It's a weakness of /follow and having only 1 brain split among several characters.

There's a lot of videos here if you skim through this forum, and watching others do their thing is a great way to learn. Not to mention some twitch streamers with hundreds of hours of video. Probably going to be the best way to find your answers, and everyone has been really friendly about answering direct questions.
Good points. Bruce Lee (Peregrine) is very helpful and his twitch stream has lots of videos of how he has leveraged mages to get lots of things done even with no tank (his 2nd team to cap is 4Mages+Priest and his first team was 4Warlocks+Priest).

For easier content most of what I saw was AE & other AoE of groups followed by quick drinking and then rinse/repeat.

For other content he exercised precise control of up to 4 mobs prior to the pull (targeting all at once) and then sheeped them and then took down the remaining mobs (if any) one by one and then circled back killing each sheeped mob one by one as well (all single target focused).

Very impressive and he adapts to the content. An example of how he did harder content is here:

His twitch URL is the bottom of that first post and it has lots of videos of him leveling with lots of AE & other AoE...

The alternative approach that seems to speak better to me is to just Tank things and then AoE or focus fire targets depending on preference. If you are having trouble with aggro then I would tank and work on focus fire for a bit and see if that suits you. The advantage of that is that you should at most get 1 mob on your DPS at a time if they are only damaging 1 target at a time.
