The way that works is a combo of pet-only damage not crediting the kill to the pet-owner (to avoid afk pet grinding), and that if you are grouped with any other character some "anti kill-steal" logic kicks in (which has morphed over the last couple years).

I think the reasoning is something along the lines of this:

  • If a high level toon is killing mobs that a low level toon as tagged it's likely power leveling, so cut exp gained by lower level by a lot.
  • If a high level toon is killing mobs that a group has tagged it might be griefing, so award exp to the group. and if there is only one group member in kill range it gets full exp.
  • If a high level toon is doing damage that is credited to them, and that amount of damage is greater than the damage dealt by the group of lower levels, cut exp some.
  • If high level toon uses a method of killing mobs that doesn't credit them with kill-damage (such as a pet, or totems) the percent damage done just by tagging the mob is enough to award full exp to the grouped lower level toon(s).
This works, and it works well, so well in fact I'm wondering is this account bannable?
