I have a crew of RL friends playing and we'll likely do 5-man content together leveling and farming gear.

Other people have the following: priest, warlock, & maybe a dps druid. I shouldn't count on the druid but they may play sometime.

I'd like to be able to progress when they aren't online but also support filing a group when they are online.

Currently I have a Hunter around lv 17 so not super attached to him but he's been fun.

When they are on I'm thinking maybe doing: warrior, hunter, 0-1 mages to fill party.

When they aren't online I figured I should have either a priest or paladin to heal. Then likely extra mages I guess?

Alternatively I could forget about the Hunter and just do war + healer + mages then drop my healer & some mages when they are online.

Anyone have any better ideas or recommendations about what would be best?

    Thanks!
If I were you I would do my own self-sufficient 5box group so you can include and work with them when they are around but are not hampered when they are not.

With no other goals factored in, the prototypical best all around group for farming dungeons, for most boxers, is likely:

    Tank+Healer+3DPS
    Paladin+Dwarf-Priest+2Warlocks+Mage

That team is a fully capable "Trinity team" (Tank+Healer+DPS) that is also capable of strong no-push-back AoE with 2 Pet Tanks (and the best Threat management)...

From a DPS perspective you can alternatively do 2Mages+Warlock, all Warlocks, or even all Mages (though Warlocks are generally more forgiving for boxers). The bottom line is that ranged DPS are the most flexible & usually it makes sense to have at least 1 Warlock and 1 Mage.

Note that any Healer can work just Dwarven Priests are generally the best all-around with the best toolbox.

Even the Tank can be any valid Tank (Warrior or Druid) but Paladins are the most forgiving with the best "built-in tools" from the get go.

Note that the above is with no other goals factored in... Usually mixing in 1 or any given non-optimum class because you want to "main" that class will allow you to still have viable dungeon group (maybe no longer optimal though). Classes that come to mind in the category of "viable but not optimal" are ones like Rogue & Hunter that are OK to have up-to 1 in the group (though you may need to drive from them to reasonably optimize them).

If you want a more full discussion on deciding on a good 5 box team I would read the following:
