How many mages

I want 3 mages for a PvP scenario in classic. What is the optimal number to level at once? Should I just do the 3, or do 5? And if I only do the 3, can I level some other classes I want to try with them (no healer)?

Generally if you are going to do multiple why not do a full party of 5? If you have a 3 Mages and a Tank and Healer you can level in instances/dungeons. If you are leveling just via questing and/or mob grinding then any dps should be fine though you may want a healer.

I've seen videos of people doing dungeons with 5 frost mages. Is there a break point where you can do full dps? Like would 4 mages and a rogue work

You won't be able to clear all dungeons with 5 mages. Some bosses early on will give you trouble before you get enough spell damage and some bosses in later dungeons have too much health to burn before your characters will start dying.

A tank and healer will allow you to clear all 5man content.

I'm leveling a 4 mage + 1 priest team now more\less just wanding stuff to death. They are great for farming so far. They are all level 12 now and AOE is just around the corner. :-)
