Raid grinding is my actual preferred way to level in any MMO where it is remotely viable. I don't think it is going to be very viable in WoW, because the key to raid grinding is to pull enormous numbers of mobs. For example, the fastest way to level in DaoC for a long time, was to raid grind with pet pulling. Send pets out, pull 30-40 mobs, and have a 30 man raid just mow them down as quickly as possible. It was similar in SWTOR as well, raid grinding in elite areas.

The issue is, WoW doesn't really have anything that can support pulls of this size/frequency so, the xp per kill is never compensated by the size of the pulls. Instance lockouts will also be a huge problem. That said, if you could get around the lockout timers, it might actually be worth 10 manning instances, just because, while it would probably be quite a bit slower than just 5 boxing them, doing 10 at once might be faster than doing 5 at once twice.

I agree, someone should try it

I tested open world xp gains with regards to solo, raid, or party. I plan on 8 boxing eventually, but first want to solo level a mage. So I tested mob tagging as a means to get ahead in the starter zone. I dont recall the exact numbers, but I specifically remember receiving more xp in an 8 man raid compared with my 5 man party. I was surprised by this as it was not the outcome I expected. If I had to guess at the numbers I would say it was something like 60 xp for solo, 25 for duo, 30 for 5 man party and 35 for 8 man raid. It could be that this wouldnt hold up inside a dungeon or it could be that Im completely wrong about what I remember, but if you could get roughly half normal xp in a raid it would seem like a good way to level big groups. Definitely worth further investigation.

When it goes live we can get to 5 boxers together somewhere to test a 10 man RFC/Deadmines. Looking forward to some of these questions getting answered. Just a few more days.

Yeah, the caps always cracked me up. I wish doing >5-member Dungeons was more of a thing; I only remember someone trying to put something like this together once in all these years, when a server was still pretty new.

The only thing I wanted to add to this conversation of value was this: in the text you posted it says level ranges but doesn't list the absolute bare minimum level you can enter a dungeon at, which might come in handy for three >5 groups, ie level 8 for RFC and lots of other weird values like:

    10: The Deadmines

    10: Wailing Caverns

    14: Shadowfang Keep

    15: The Stockade

    15: Blackfathom Deeps

    19: Gnomeregan

    19: Razorfen Kraul

    21:: The Scarlet Monastery

    25: Razorfen Downs

    30: Uldaman

    35: Zul'Farrak

    35: Maraudon

35: Temple of Atal'hakkar (The Sunken Temple)

    40: Blackrock Depths

    45: Blackrock Spire

test the resulting exp somewhere on private servers, this is very interesting)

but i found on off wiki on wow classic

"While in a raid group, players do not receive credit for completing quest objectives unless the quest calls for a raid. Players also receive an experience reduction for any mob killed while in a raid group. These are to prevent players from creating very large groups in order to complete normal quests or other game content intended for parties of 5 or fewer. This experience reduction is simply that the usual "group XP bonus" is not applied while in a raid group. Many instances requiring a raid are also subject to a raid timer."

Hi there, out of curiosity what content are you planning to do with an 8 box? I currently have a 10 box on retail mostly for gold farming(gathering) to feed my main but on classic I feel like the game limits me to 5 box if I want to be efficient on gold farming(if you exclude powerlevelling alts for transmute cooldowns). Cheers and I hope you have a wonderful time in Classic either way :-)

Don't some Dungeons allow 5-10 characters? Yes converting into a Raid to be able to go 6+ may impact XP while leveling but wouldn't it only give faster clears at cap when you XP is maxed?
