I don't think people actually converse about these CPUs by using their code name without first mentioning which chip(s) they're actually referring to, especially on just a standard internet forum, and it's much easier to say something like Ryzen 3000-series and 3rd generation Threadripper (TR3).

I was wondering: Are there any benefits associated with having more than 12 cores when 5-boxing?

As Ugh said, it depends entirely on what you're looking to accomplish.

Looks like third gen threadripper might have 24+ cores.

The current 2nd generation Threadripper 2990WX already has 32C/64T, so I would hope so.
