Verizon FIOS?

Not exactly multibox related, but do any of you guys have Verizon FIOS? I just bought a townhouse, and there is a green utility box behind my house (no further than 20ft from the edge of my tiny back yard) that is labeled "Verizon FIOS". I've read that this is the access box for fiber that has been installed in a neighborhood. However, FIOS isnt available to us yet. Anyone who has FIOS... do you remember any such utility box being put in the ground? How long after did you get service?

Had fios for 3 years now and will never switch back to cable...ever. I have never lost service or had any slow downs. Service being implemented largely depends on your county rules, if there are strict guidelines and they have to fight cable providers it takes time. If there is cabling in your area you should get service, you may need to contact them and have them look your address up in ivapp. They use plats that are rather old so occasionally it says you cant get service and you can, best thing to do is ask your neighbors if they have it you can to.

I second the "Verizon FiOS rules" sentiment. I was looking last night and was sitting at 9ms latency to Magtheridon. 15mbit downloads is nice, too. I've never had a service outage with them in the 2.5 years since they installed it at my new house. Rock solid stable and when you DO have an issue, the tech support guys are actually accessible via phone, unlike other companies who shall not be named. *COUGH*TIMEWARNER*COUGH*SWBELL*COUGH*

I know it's available on the eastside. My fiance's parents have it in Redmond, and a family friend even has it out in the sticks of Maltby (I'm talking rural 3-10 acre plots). I'm surprised it's not available in town. I have heard that they have problems at apartments sometimes when the landlord doesn't want to give them permission to run the lines. Maybe that's the problem?

Could be. I live in an older building in Capitol Hill. If I had some of the monster hardware setups I see on this board I would fry every wire in the place :P

I think it was about 6 months from the time I first noticed them running fiber along the telephone poles to when it was finally available in my area. (6 very long months -- and another 6 months for the TV service to be available)

The service is great. 15/2 is pretty snappy. I hear they even have a 15/15 service available is some areas -- not in mine though

Love the FiOS TV too. In my area Time Warner was just terrible.

I don't know about your state but in NJ the cable companies have exclusive license to delivery wired television by township, so when Verizon wants to enter that market they need to go to each township and negotiate a license. While that process is going on, they can wire up your neighborhood in preparation. In my part of town there is no underground wiring, everything is on poles, and every 2nd or 3rd pole has a FIOS repeater such as you describe. I would just call them every two weeks or so and inquire...do not wait for them to call you as their marketing department is horrible and you'll wait forever.

Its well worth it though. FIOS HDTV and interet are life-changing.
