I upgraded my wife's AMD Phenom II system to an I7-2600k, 12gb ram, H80 water cooler, some other nice stuff but a shitty gpu for $600 US. Used, but mint condition off of craigslist. Could sell the AMD system for maybe $250-300 minimum. Used market could be a nice option where you're at.
