Does the shift+Left click allow you to still click on items and npc's? That might be an even better improvement for me

Unfortunately not. I just use a keymap on/off button, so when I'm doing things in town or need to loot / change areas / open chests I use that to turn it off. I prefer it to holding down shift all the time, but it was a bit annoying at the beginning.
