Some years ago, an american journalist was interviewing a black british athlete. And he kept asking about how it was as an african-american etc, and she kept telling him not to call her that.

And she pointed out that she was neither african, nor american, but in fact british! The journalist was at a loss of words, which is rather rare :)

My favorite part of that is:

    Haha.

As for the "n-word", here in NYC lots of kids use it the way you would use someone's name or call them "bro". Many of them are black and hispanic, the sort of kids whose parents will march on City Hall if a public official was to use a racial slur. But they rationalize it when the kids do it. I will never understand that.

Not to turn the discussion into one about racism/N-word, but honestly... The way I see it is that it's not ok for anyone, regardless of color, to use the term.

Just as we shouldn't be racist to those of certain skin colors by using derogatory names towards them, they shouldn't be racist by allowing themselves, and nobody else of a different color, from using the term in a positive manner (i.e. "hey bro").

Racism goes both ways. Either nobody says the word, or everyone can say the word. And since nobody can agree on it's use, or whether it's positive or negative, I prefer the former solution: nobody says the word.

I'm really looking forward to ruining a few BGs Only 30 more levels...

Historically oppressed minority groups often adopt the words used against them as a source of empowerment. Words can be used as powerful tools to instill a sense of inferiority/superiority. Adopting a word of phrase that has historically been used to keep you down takes power away from the oppressor. A lot has been written on the topic if you're really interested.

Oppressing the perceived oppressor is not the correct way to go about things. Using the word and then attacking anyone else who attempts to use it in the same positive fashion (not saying that the above SS is a positive use of the word, but just being hypothetical), is also oppression.

Essentially, using a word and preventing those who do not share your same skin color from using it is also a form of racism. Just because my ancestry is different doesn't mean I should be prevented from using the word in the same "empowering" manner. It's hypocritical on the part of the former-oppressed. They are, essentially, promoting racism in the opposite direction by attacking people, purely based on skin color, from using "their" language. I would have a different opinion if the use of certain words was allowed by all people when used in an "empowering" manner.

In any case, this isn't the conversation for this thread, but I'd be happy to discuss more if someone wants to make a CONSTRUCTIVE thread in the off-topic forum. (I emphasize constructive because these sort of discussions can often become heated. If things get out of hand the thread WILL be locked.)

My last notes on the secondary discussion: I just remember some interviews I've seen regarding this issue and how it's gotten so politically correct...one of the older black gentlemen who was interviewed said something along the lines of "I take just as much offense to being called African-American as I do other terms. I think we should move past that prefix & connotation, as our ancestors may be from Africa, Ireland, and other places, WE personally were born HERE. We are natural-born Americans. Not African-, irish-, chinese-, or what have you-Americans, just simply Americans." and that pretty much sums up my personal opinion on it. Regardless of descent, you are who YOU are, where you are now. Now if only everyone else would look at the mind/personality over skin color and the like we'd all be better off; s'what is nice about the internet, one of the GOOD things about the Anonymity it provides. You act and react to people's personality andhow they present themselves first :p

(As far as "Black" being derogatory...where I grew up it hasn't ever had a bad connotation as far as I knew or believed; I had a bunch of black friends growing up(And Asian to boot) and it never meant shit to me; if someone's a dick they'll be a dick regardless of their looks :p If they're awesome friends they'll be awesome friends regardless too. In a more general view, "Black" shouldn't ever be taken derogatorily unless the rest of the context implies it, as "White" sure as hell doesn't carry the same stigma; I don't get mad if I'm called a white person because I am :p)

As for the main Discussion...yeah I lol'd :p Sometimes I wish they'd enable cross-faction chatting for say a day or week, maybe some world-wide event that either destroys the language barrier or it's disrupted or grants everyone a common language temporarily, and see how "bad" things would actually get if we were able to communicate...spammers would happen obviously but people spam /spit macros anyways, but I'd still like to see it :p

I rarely see any racist comment about the black community on the general channels but as a french guy and a multiboxer playing on a US server, I take a lot of crap every days.

I actually see extremely inflammatory words in /general, /trade, /yell, and /say on a regular basis. Mind you they are also directly in reference to me - my critic base is around the same as my fan base on my server and faction. While I am not a prude, and play with the language filter off because I consider mature language mature and not a crime, I have no idea how such racist, inflammatory words are let slide on my new server.

I originate from a PvE server, so I'm wondering if the standards for a PvP server are different, because I have had friends receive warnings, and I myself have received one, for short phrases put in general chat. In all these cases, the words were not explicit language, but simply were taken out of context. One had to learn to be 100% rated G in general chat on my old server because you would hear about it otherwise. Anyone else have experience with PvE vs PvP server chat maturity?
