Thread: Moving to ESDF

There's another way to hit CTRL? I guess it's my nails, but I've got no other way to hit CTRL without hitting every other button on the way down, lol.

I don't think I could ever switch to alternate movement keys. If I swapped to ESDF, Tab {my IWT key}, ~ {my IWM key} and CTRL all become hard to reach. Alt can be pushed down with the bottom segment of my ring finger, but since I've got a wedding ring there, I have no real sensation of pushing. It's much easier for me to simply fold my thumb under to hit ALT as I do on WASD. It also makes my hand rest on the left Windows key and Caps Lock, which are not keys I want to be tripping over all the time. It feels like a disaster for my carpel tunnel.

As far as the mouse, I think I use far more mouse buttons than I do keyboard buttons. It's just way easier for me to roll my thumb around than it is to reach around a keyboard. All those years with the Gameboy perhaps.

I've never tried one. I tried one gamepad once, the Wolfking Warrior, and I couldn't get into it. It was cheap, like $30, but the new gamepads these days are 3-4 times that much after tax and shipping.

I've been wanting to move more stuff to my mouse for some time, but while the G700 has a handful of buttons to use, I feel that they're placed in awkward positions which make them difficult to repeatedly hit while maintaining the camera/turning/movement.

I feel that the G700 fits my hand perfectly and weighs just right (because they're a battery in there), but earlier today I went ahead and hooked up the Cyborg MMO7 that I had lying around and am now using it. My major turn off about this mouse before was the lack of ability to re-map some of its buttons, but they've since updated their software and give people the ability to map everything except one (which I'd still like to re-map).

Over the past day I've felt like I've had to learn how to play games on the computer all over again with this new mouse and keyboard hand placement. -_-

When I was using esdf (when I played tera), I found it easiest to learn if I stuck something to the E key so that I had something to "feel" for. I think it was a bit of sticker but anything small and flat that adheres to the key will do.

Having your fingers naturally on the home keys is wunderbar once you get used to it, and it opens up a few more keys on the perimeter as well.

    I use EADF, though. E = forward, A = backward, S = crouch/down, D = strafe left, F = strafe right.

a mouse with tilt wheel is awesome for strafe..it allows you to kite and smash dps buttons at the same time ( way easier than doing it via keyboard buttons imo ) then it allows you to map more fire power near your keyboard fingers

Using WASD where AD are strafing, E and Q are other binds. But what gave me more new good binds was to start using modifiers with WASD, however I find the CTRL button extremely inconvenient for my hands. Thus installed sharpkeys, and bound caps lock to control which I find to be amazing: have to move my pinky just a little bit up and down to toggle a whole new set of keybinds.

And then the biggest thing: I bound my naga to numpad, and in combination with a hotkey script, I can use both alt/shift and ctrl + numpad. That is another 48 hotkeys that are unlocked.

A typical naga macro for me looks like (this one bound to naga 1)

    /tar [nomod] arena1
    /focus [mod:alt] arena1
    /stopcasting [mod:shift]
    /cast [mod:shift, @arena1] counterspell
    /stopcasting [mod:ctrl]
    /cast [mod:ctrl, @arena1] sheep

Same macro on naga 2, but then arena1 is replaced by arena2, etc
And this obviously can be extended to make them use in pve as well.
When boxing I heal with target heals: naga1 targets party1, naga2 targets party2, etc ...

As far as my experience with swapping out binds it goes faster than you would expect:
at the start of MoP I swapped my Azerty keyboard (french layout) for a Qwerty keyboard, you can imagine how much of a frustration that creates during the first days as pretty much every character is on a different location. 1 week into it I'd still have problems with a few keys like ' or %, but for 99% of my typing it was no problem at all. Now I even use qwerty and azerty keyboards in the mix, since my laptop is still azerty.

TLDR: swapping to something you got so used to goes faster than you might think, but you have to stick it through.

    Any tips?
It took me a couple of days. I dumped the "turn" keys (were 'a' and 'd') and moved the strafe keys down to 's' and 'f'. That way the 'w' and 'r' keys were available for keybinding. It's a bad idea to keyturn anyway. If for some reason I must keyturn I use the arrow keys. So the only movement keys I use are 'e' for forward and 's' and 'f' for strafing. 's' or 'f' plus right mouse-button for circle strafing.

    No regrets.

The only change I made to movement keys was to invert WASD into ASDX, where S moves forward and X moves backwards. I use the keyboard for movement most of the time but almost never backpedal, and found it more comfortable to have the "forward" button in line with the turn left/right. I left Q and E as strafe keys, but I usually just use shift to strafe. I use W as my IWT key and try to limit my keybinds to 1-7 or thereabouts, with few modifiers.

I didn't see it mentioned in this thread, but theCore for Starcraft II is built on principles that can be adapted to WoW. It shifts the hand so that the thumb is on Shift, rather than the pinky since that's the most frequently used key in Starcraft II. This means moving a right hander mouser's left hand over to the right side of the keyboard. They also adjust the home row position and tilt the keyboard. Overall the ability to easily thumb to 4 different modifier combinations (alt, shift, control, shift+control) expands the number of reachable abilities significantly.

    theCore homepage: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/view...opic_id=341878

I find the older outdated introductory videos better for getting a quick understanding.
    Why the Core? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4luxRv4ye0
    Positioning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj5Xj9LJKZQ also http://youtu.be/zbI1YMEXz98?t=3m40s

I use a Core inspired layout myself in WoW (single player shadow priest screenshot at bottom). My right hand rests on fghj, index to pinky. My movement keys are on my pinky at jkm, (forward, strafe right, strafe left, backwards). My thumb hits alt where healing and utility binds are mapped.

The layout is by no means optimal, there are some swaps I could do to improve it. (should shift leftward so my thumb can hit control and shift better, but I have plenty of binds with one modifier).
