Thread: Trying EVE

    Default Trying EVE

So I am bored with gaming in general, thought I would try a change things up a bit and play EVE.

I am new to the game so I started with one account. What would you experts recommend as far as learning the game and so forth, with an eye towards eventual MB'ing?

Any tips would be helpful. I am a total noob.

Play the tutorial missions. They give you a good start in the different 'professions' in eve, and can serve to springboard you in the direction you want to take. You'll also get a bunch of free ships and skillbooks.

I also kind of like the "idea" of eve, but in practice, it seems a lot more "mine constantly, and make money, get bigger ships to mine some more" without any of the "Epic Galactic Star Wars Battle From Hell" type PvP I imagine would be fun.

Also, isn't it a game where the people who played first will always be ahead, theres no speed boost in the lvling curve, so you can never catch up to players who started 5 years ago? no resets like expansions in WoW?

You can catch up - it takes some time and knowledge around the game but there is a certain point where you can be capped on all the skills relevant for the ship youre flying (or any other activity). Certain things like flying supercaps (the biggest ships ingame) will take like 1.5 to 2 years to be capped out in the relevant skills.

What I disliked in the long run was that EVE turned into a second job as I got deeper into corporation-related activities.

and you can always jump ahead by buying a char with the skills you want

100% legit; you can buy chars for in-game currency on the official forums... https://forums.eveonline.com/default...g=topics&f=277
Follow the rules and the transaction is covered by CCP.

If you don't have the in-game ISK, then buy some PLEX from CCP and sell them on the Jita market... https://secure.eveonline.com/PLEX/
Last time I looked, PLEX were around 580m ISK in Jita.

I heard recently that it's quite a bit cheaper to buy the PLEX off Amazon.com... http://www.amazon.com/PLEX-EVE-Onlin.../dp/B00A2CI8LE
but I have no experiece of either, tbh.

I'm probably going to do the ISK for PLEX thing. The game lags on my MacBook Pro, which bums me out. It's a different experience, not sure how I like it so far.

do yourself a favor, and join the militia. or simply move out of highsec and go to some quiet lowsec space. (khanid region, or if you are feeling adventurous go to the wildlands region!)

living in lowsec is much more fun.

if you are playing eve, and your ships aren't exploding you are playing mining online, something which is nowhere near as fun as eve online.

unlike other games, "stuff" can be lost, something which usually makes newcomers to eve become risk adverse, its only natural, in fact hoarding is a natural human behavior. the problem is that fear will ruin your enjoyment of the game. fear is the path of the carebear, and being reckless will lead to you being broke. (in-game) the middle ground is just being smart, and losing stuff in a calculated manner achieving short term goals.

want to do lowsec exploration? do it on t1 cruisers with t1logi support. want to do lvl5s? do it on t1 battlecruisers with a t2 logistics.

the game rewards multiboxing by allowing the fleet to be very cheap, so your risk/reward will always be favorable. you can spend 2 - 3 hours doing lowsec exploration, lose 2 t1 fleets and still come out making 300% of your investment in ships back.

and the best place to pick up all the skills you need is in FactionWarfare lowsec. you will learn how to lose ships, how to recuperate quickly, and since you are new with low SP, and will be flying in space that's limited to frigate and cruiser sized ships, you wont feel overpowered by the veterans, at least not so much.

It sure is fun when you're cranking out caps/supers/doctrine for your alliance by the shitload. To each their own I suppose. Just remember, all those ships you blow up had to be made by someone. If you play the whole mining/manufacturing/research chain of production with a multiboxed fleet, you can make some serious cash.

I personally swap between doing industry and other isk generating methods (ratting/plexing) all the time, though my mining fleet is the best isk/hr setup I currently have.

But yea, jumping into faction warfare is never a bad idea. You'll get plenty of opportunities to shoot at other people, and you can do it in cheap frigs. Multiboxing a blob of cheap frigates is one of my favorite passtimes.

So, if someone wanted to play EVE, wanted to have enough money to buy ships and run around with a big ball of death ganking and having fun, even dying to others (think of WoW and running around with 2 or 3 multiboxers, it ALWAYS attracts a crowd, and you can almost always kill more people than it takes to kill you.

Whats the benefit though? If I kill a bunch of people, then I lose, dont i lose everything I made? do you keep money? How does the market system work?

The market in eve is much more realistic than wow. 99% of everything in the game is made by players, or looted from npc wrecks. When something blows up, its gone, which in turn drives the demand in the market. To make money from killing other people, you'd have to loot their wreck, and get the swag somewhere safe without getting blown up yourself. There are many people in the game that make their money off of ganking people who are moving expensive goods.
