Problem with accidental PVP flagging

I've developed a problem that is kind of embarrassing, but it has happened twice now so I think I need to learn how to tell if it is happening.

While doing IAs (on my pve server, so groups are made up of def + guardiands), I generally run between quest objectives killing everything with my bound fate ability (instant cast aoe). Just a way to pick up extra xp as I'm running along. When in areas with defiant quest masters (or just footholds?) this includes sometimes tab or aoe hitting some protected defiant npcs, which turns on my pvp flag. Although the defiant quest area guys hit hard, I'm using cleric rotations with a lot of built in healing so I don't really notice or care about the damage they do, I do, however, care about the pvp flag.

Either this pvp flag switch or douchebaggery from IA team members then disbands the IA group (not sure whether it was intentional or a game mechanic on this point), and the defiants in the IA group then use this opportunity (both times that this happened I had pulled 8+ mobs for the IA kill quest) to turn on me and kill me. In one case the team died in the other it did not, but either way this is very aggravating. Any ideas for how to deal with this? For example I'm not actually sure how to see if my own pvp flag has been turned on. My assist macros (I assist by name) of course still work in this situation, but I can't actually see the health bars of my team once the disband occurs so it is still very confusing.

Out in the world not in an IA this isn't a problem, because my characters remain in a group together so dealing with random pvp attacks is not confusing, but the sudden disband in the midst of a hard hitting pack of mobs is indeed a problem.

Have you turned off auto pvp flag in the interface options? I aoe near flagged people and am fine.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that and see if it fixes the problem.
