Okay so is it the general consensus that using a high end LCD TV to play WoW multibox on simply isn't good enough?

    :p
    Thats my contention.

The thing I love the most is when people name drop their "HUGE" plasma and how a 50" or a 70" is gigantic. Then they run regular DVDs on it (which run at 720 x 480 (assuming NTSC). That is a third of a megapixel! A SINGLE 30" can display over EIGHT DVDs at the same time at native resolution!!! Why the heck would you want to blow that up to 50"?? Even with hardware filtering and smoothing - there is not enough physical information available to render a high resolution movie.

MAYBE if you are running HDTV but even then... the 30" DL DVIs blow that out of the water. Assume you have progressive scan HDTV (many are still interlaced, meaning you lose half of the vertical signal) - but assume you get the highest quality HDTV TV - 1080p - this is still "only" 1920x1080, so 2,073,600 pixels (2 megapixels). The 30" DL DVIs run at 2560 x 1600, or
    4,096,000 (4 megapixels). And they are 30" - not 50"+.

So even if you had a 70" plasma or what have you.... what is the point when you only need something like a 21" screen to show that in native resolution? Anything else is just upscaled.

    Seriously.

PS - What is a good mount to support 2 and 4 up to 30" monitors?
I own the Ergotron DS models. Solid and modular but a bit pricey. Try eBay.

Hanns-G makes a great 28 inch 1920x1200 (1080p) HDMI screen, it is a TN LCD at 3ms... the contrast ratio is only 800:1 which i personally find just fine. (just means that there is some backlight bleed and the blacks aren't as dark as they could be) It retails for about $450-550 wich is considerably less than 30 inchers. They include DVI to HDMI cables and unless you want to spend the cash on a reciever or a hdmi hub you have to physically take out the cable and plug in say your x-box (with hdmi cable) to switch to it. Small downfall for a great panel at a cheap price.

There are multiple benefits to having larger landscape monitors with high resolution, as you can put fonts into a readable format at a smaller size and still read them. Whereas with a 21" monitor at 1920x1200 i would end up covering a fair ammount of my viewport between mods and chatwindow, which would definatly take away from gameplay. The other big one is not having to sit nearly as close to the screens.

Upscaling is taking a smaller resolution and essentially adding pixels and then blending. Which is not the case with say my 42" plasma, it runs a native 1080i which means that the video card updates the odd line and the even lines seperatly, at 60hz this means that each set gets updated 30 times a second, still beyond the rate at which you can see, but you will notice a bit of motion blurring at times to a very small degree. Since your eyes do their own blending and much better at the range you would be at to play on one, this produces a "smoother" picture. Nevertheless there is no upscaling involved. The only way upscaling would be involved is if the tv's native resolution exceeded what you could send to it (not sure how you would expierence that these days), instead of leaving black pixels it averages the neighbors and fills it.

Plasma does burn in at faster rates than LCDs; and yes any monitor will burn in with enough time of the same colors being displayed. This can be overcome by having a fast color changing screensaver running on it while you aren't using it rather than just turning it off. There are even programs available for download that force feed a "dead" pixel with rapid color changes to help get it unstuck. But for your investment, LCD is worth the money if you can take the lower contrast ratio.

I have a Gateway XHD3000 30" monitor (2560 x1600) and can tell you it is an exceptional display. I have ran it in portrait mode with two instances open on it vertically and it looks great. 1600x1250 each, if you were to buy two of these displays and run them both vertically as dual display mode?? maybe?? Would be interesting. Got mine through Circuit City for about $1800 with shipping and tax. Also has good PIP and is the most versatile computer monitor I have ever used.

I'm using a 39" / 94 cm LCD tv, with 1920x1080 pixels. Sure, not that great, but when sitting just 1 meter aways from it, it really looks good. Can read all the chat logs with no problem, and the screen is very fast aswell. Just had to dim the backlite, because it was waaaaay to bright to look at for several hours from this close.

I just bought it for use with my gaming consoles, not even thinking about linking my pc to it ... But when I found out it could be done, I kinda got scared from the really big WoW I was looking at 8)

    this one rocks!

pretty sure its been mentioned somewhere on this forum already though.
it has been but it is still cool. However it has some pretty bad points. like visible lines in the screen, its a bloated beast (not thin like an LCD) and very heavy. Unless someone gave it to you for free I wouldnt recommend getting a first generation of these
