Imagine that the same good player played every single class as every single spec in a raid, and every time he had the same iLvl gear. Assuming there's a separate, dedicated healer and tank, which class would deal the highest AOE dps?
Elemental shamans are the AOE kings at the moment. Followed by demo locks. Thats the general answer.
If you have packs of say 20 adds, then priest (mind sear) and sv hunter (multi shot) are really good as well.
DK's (both unholy and frost) have really good aoe dmg as well.
Fire mages are always up there as well.
If the adds are too far apart you gonna have to look at multi dotting classes like affliction warlocks, boomkins and shadow priests.
But in your average aoe situation, nothing beats chain lightning at the moment. It's insane.

In 5.3 mage gets 40percent more damage with arcane explosion and blizzard.
Arcane mages do more damage due to their mastery.
