I'm running a single core 3.2ghz system and can 5-box on one machine. I have 4gb ram (only 3.5gb is recognised (xp) ) but I do okay.

I upgrade to a quad core in less than 7 days though so looking forward to that, then I get my second machine in 2 weeks.

I would say RAM is the biggest thing to focus on IMO.
