Default Protection Warriors in 5.2 thoughts

    Hey guys,

I'm just 10 levels away from 90 with my warriors and I would like to discuss a few things.

    Protection vs Arms and Fury
    --------------------------
So far I've been leveling my warriors in prot spec ( all in combat stance, main toon in prot stance for aggro ). I noticed that the most abilities in protection deal an amount of damage instead of weapon damage. For example:

    Shield Slam:
Slam the target with your shield, causing 4561 to 4794 damage.
Generates 20 Rage in Defensive Stance.

    Mortal Strike:
A vicious strike that deals 175% weapon damage plus 38 and causes Mortal Wounds on the target.
    Generates 10 Rage.
    --------------------------

I've leveled 4 warriors a few months ago and on level 50 I noticed that my tank was shield slamming for 4k damage, while mortal strike was critting for 2-3k. I think protection is a very strong spec with very high burst damage. On level 79 I kill trash mobs in instances in 2 GCD while wearing a level 60 shield on all toons ( you can use a level 10 shield still get very high damage I suppose ).

My goal was leveling in prot and respeccing to arms for PvP on 90 but now I'm getting closer I've been thinking about staying prot. I was looking up glyphs yesterday and I think the following glyphs will be really great:

    Glyphs
    --------------------------
Glyph of Shield Slam : Your Shield Slam now dispels 1 magical effect.

    - Imagine fighting a priest of mage you just instantly dispell his Power Word: Shield or Frost Barrier :-)
    --------------------------
Glyph of Hindering Strikes : Your Heroic Strike and Cleave now also reduce the target's movement speed by 50% for 8 sec.

    - With this I don't have to worry about applying Hamstring anymore
    --------------------------
Glyph of Incite : Using Devastate during Deadly Calm reduces the cost of Heroic Strike and Cleave by an additional 20 Rage.

    - Heroic Strike and Cleave cost 10 less Rage with Deadly Calm. With Glyph of Incite the cost of Heroic Strike and Cleave is reduced by an additional 20 Rage. Heroic Strike costs 30 rage, so this will make Heroic Strikes free to cast for 9 seconds and will benefit my one shot macro ( Recklessness, DPS Trinkets, Racials, Avatar and Deadly Calm ).
    --------------------------
Glyph of Heavy Repercussions : While your Shield Block is active, your Shield Slam hits for an additional 50% damage.

    - Shield Block only lasts 6 seconds so this means 1 shield slam will do 50% more damage. The downside of this glyph is that you need to save and spend 60 rage on Shield Block first, which means rage managing.
    --------------------------

    Talents

    --------------------------
I've been thinking about this talent build for PvP: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#wiE|dcjRoV
    --------------------------

I will have to round-robin Mass Spell Reflection, Shockwave and Disrupting Shout.

What are your thoughts? Also I wonder if prot is better then arms on 90 when I have gear.

    Kind regards,

Tanks do damage based on their amount of vengeance. Player combat never triggers vengance. Your damage will be horrible when you factor in the resilience.

And deadly calm will be removed from the game in 1 week btw.

Aww.... I really thought prot had potential in PvP.

Well it's gonna be arms then. Does anyone have an idea how to properly being able to use Heroic Leap with ISBoxer?

Mouse broadcast next click, it's a built it thing. I use it for death and decay, healing rain, etc. It won't be so reliable with Heroic Leap though.

Honestly, I hope you can pull this off, but warriors are the second to last class I would ever try to box due to their mobility requirements.

In order of classes I would be last to box:
    1. Mage
    2. Warrior
    3. Rogue
    4. Feral Druid

With warriors you're going to have to work out a pretty good charge, heroic leap, intervene system with banners or you're going to sit snared awhile.

Prot is not viable. You don't get vengeance from PVP targets and you're just going to hit like a wet noodle and waste time.

And BTW every comp ever seems like it has potential in PVP... until you hit 90.
Look at all the low level teams tearing up BGs, you can box 10x brewmaster monks and be unstoppable at low levels but things change at 90. They change a lot.

Yeah on my warrior I almost never use heroic leap.. It's a DPS loss but using it is a PITA

I would be so happy if they changed it so we could heroic leap to our target, instead of having to click the location.

Ive thought those same thoughts many times my friend. They try to make classes more "interesting" as they put it by adding more skill shots and such, but it's a pain for us boxers.

Well that's not really what the ability is designed for. That's called charge. When you play solo you often heroic leap away then charge back, or just heroic leap between people and shockwave, or you can use it to avoid fall damage, or carry flags faster, etc.

youre right of course, but a glyph to change heroic leap to a "charge multi shot" type ability that was targeted instead of skill-shot would be awesome for having a warrior slave. it'll never happen, just saying a boy can dream! Haha
