Thread: Mining

    Default Mining

So I just started playing eve about a month ago, and I have a question I was hoping some of you veterans could answer. I'm currently running 8 accounts (7 covetors and 1 orca) and I had been sticking to only .8 and .9 space, fearing that If I ventured any lower I would be a sitting duck. However yesterday I made the move to a .7 system, and with the asteroids being larger and there being a very small amount of people, I am able to mine without having to constantly switch asteroids which is great. This got me thinking, if a .7 system was that much of a step up from .8 would it be worth moving to a .6? I'm not really sure how security scales as i am fairly new to the game, so it is hard for me to judge the risk vs the reward. I understand that at the end of the day, anyone who really wants me dead can kill me, however I'm trying to minimize that risk as much as possible while maxing my profits.

TLDR: Is it worth the drop in security to mine in a .6 over a .7.

    thanks in advance.

You really do not have to worry much about mining in any High Sec regardless (0.5+). There is the same risk in any of them. If someone was going to gank you and you are one to not fall for the can flipping tricks (that is assuming even if you use them), then they will most likely suicide gank you. At this point it doesnt matter which high sec you are in, if they want you dead and know what they are doing, they will get you.

I mine in a .5 system when i play, i rarely run into people. However i usually have a Domi and Cloaked falcon near by for protection and threat projection. When someone that looks like a threat comes near my toons, i will usually decloak and recloak the falcon. They will usually leave.

Only risk comes when entering Lowsec and null, which the roids are usually better, but are usually rougher as someones always looking for a fight in lowsec and null.

Generally a way to keep someone from ganking you is to move systems every now and then, that way your not always in the same spot. I usually base out of a central system. that is close to lowsec (where my Rorqual and Carriers are based out of), near ICE so i can mine that for a change of scenery, and near a few systems that have several belts. With the recent changes you used to be able to hide gear in an orca so it couldnt be scanned out for evaluating targets. Now it can be.

Wow thanks for the information, it was incredibly helpful. I think i'll take your advise and move to a .5!

Mining in hisec is not the safe fluffy bunny experience it once was, even if the roids were good which they are not (even in .5). Between for fun ganks and things like this http://greedygoblin.blogspot.com/201...new-order.html you have to keep your eye on what's up even in hisec. Mining in lowsec is usually good for a small amount of time until the random neutrals (are they good guys or bad guys, or are they doing something else and not interested in you?) show up. Or the Pirates who you don't know if they're Pirates. Or the Pirates you DO know that are pirates. We've had folks try to mine in my relatively quiet wing of lowsec and it never turns out well, as they end up docked to avoid the random pirate or dead by the hand of the random pirate. The trick that Meeo discusses above of having a few cloaked ships watching your tail is fine, but that's two less pilots that could be mining and making you isk instead of standing guard.

I would recommend joining a nullsec indy renter corp where you can mine in relative peace. You'll have to dock up much less, get attacked much less, and be able to (most likely) sell your minerals directly to your corp/alliance (and let them do the logistics of getting it back to hisec to sell).

TLDR hisec roids suck, you will die in lowsec (or spend a lot of time docked), find a good corp and go to nullsec if you just want to mine.

That said, holy crap I was broke forever when I started Eve, he has been playing 1 month and has 7 covetors (going for like 40m now) and an orca (600m+). Also, skill wise... wow.

    Anyways.

Ive been mining in high sec since I started playing again, have yet to get into missions this time around. Missions are definitely, without question, better money, but I love to zone out and mine for whatever reason. Anyways.

As long as you are actively cycling your strip miners, high sec isnt too bad.

From what Ive heard, and you low sec folks correct me if im wrong, but with how high the price is on trit lately, veldspar beats out even some low sec / null sec ores on the "what to mine" list... that might be outdated info though.

I would love to take Morganti's advice and join a null sec corp and go mine the big boy roids, but there are hassles there too. I have at two points in my eve career lived out in 0.0 and both times the same thing happened. When mining was good, it was great. But then some jackass would come sit in the system cloaked and nobody could ever find him and so we sheepy miners wouldnt know whether it was safe to mine or not... that and 0.0 rats are no joke and will kill the shit out of your barge if youre not on your game, but thats less of a problem now that im boxing.

Anyways, that was way rambly. All I got -_-

I assume he sold some plexes or bought some toons...there's no way to get in an orca in a month that I know of And yes, there are no roids in lowsec that make it an improvement over hisec.

As for AFK cloakers, they are either a solo recon/sbomber in which case you'll lose one or two barges tops if they go for them (hint: use the cheap barges when cloakers are in system) which makes them baitable, or they are a cyno ship and you'll lose one or two barges tops as they uncloak/point/cyno you (hint: use the cheap barges when cloakers are in system) which also makes them baitable, or they are true afk cloakers and they wont do anything (hint: use the cheap barges when cloakers are in system...are you seeing a pattern?). Keep your orca boosting with your nose sticking out of a POS and either jetcan mine like the old days or hit the station when your ore hold fills up. If you are using cheap barges then your orca is the best target out there, so keep him safe. Congrats, you are still making money now with an afk cloaker in system

As for rats, be creative. Don't want to waste a slot on a fighting ship that sits and does nothing but kill rat spawns? Get a mining dominix with a civilian gun and big tank to tank the rats while his drones eat them. Or bring a RR Domi to keep barges up while his drones eat them and he can use mining drones the rest of the time...things like that.

I'm with you, things would certainly be different now. Both financially and because I am 6 boxing.
